Is that a dragon?

Hermione was in the common room studying her potions book. The common room was empty since Ron and Harry went to the Quidditch field. She tried her hardest to focus on her reading, but her mind wandered elsewhere. Y/N, she thought. She hadn't seen you since Charms and was starting to become worried as you should've been back in the common room by now. As if on queue, you entered the common room with a box grinning ear to ear. Hermione eyed you and the box suspiciously.

"Y/N," she started, forgetting all about her reading. "Where have you been? And what's in the box?"

You took a seat next to Hermione on the couch while she continued to look at the box curiously.

"I've been with Hagrid, love. As for the box," you said, motioning toward the object which was seated on your lap. "It's a gift I received from Hagrid. Or more like something I asked him to keep."

Hermione raised her eyebrow questioningly at you.

"So, you asked Hagrid to keep a box?"

 You let out a chuckle.

"No, ''Mione, I asked him to keep what's inside the box."

Hermione's eyes flickered with realization while she let out an oh with her face turning rosy red.

"Honestly love, for the brightest witch of our age you're not really good with common sense, are you?"

Hermione nudged you playfully before turning her attention back toward the box.

"Then what exactly is in the box that you wanted to keep so badly?"

"My baby." you responded, smiling proudly.

"Your...Your what!?" Hermione yelled, her voice full of panic and shock.

"Love, calm down," you said, trying to calm down your panicking girlfriend. "It's not an actual child. It's more of like a...pet. Yeah, that's it. A pet."

"What kind of pet?" she asked, regaining her composure.

"Promise you won't freak out?" you giggled. "I mean more than you already have."

She glared at you when you stated the last part, but nodded nonetheless. Sighing, you opened the box nervously, moving the lid aside with shaking hands. Hermione peeked into the box, but not before a strange creature poked their head outside the box. Startled, Hermione fell backward off her chair.

"Y/N!" she exclaimed. "What on earth is that?"

"So much for not freaking out," you mumbled. "Don't worry love it's only a baby. Completely harmless."

The creature snapped its jaw at Hermione.

"Harmless! I'd say it's far from it!" she said, swinging her arms around. Hermione examined the creature carefully and recognized it from Care of Magical Creatures. "Y/N? Is that a dragon? Did Hagrid give you a dragon?!"

"Well," you started. "It's more like I asked Hagrid for the dragon. He was just so adorable I had to keep him. Of course, it took some convincing for Hagrid, but he eventually gave in."

You looked down at the creature lovingly and held it in your arms removing the box from your lap. The dragon snuggled into your arms while you stroked its head. Hermione watched these exchanges of actions cautiously as if expecting the dragon to bite your head off.

Hermione sighed. "Y/N, your 'pet' is a dragon-"

"-I know that love." you interrupted, smiling cheekily at Hermione's glare.

"It's a dragon," she continued. "One of the most dangerous creatures in the world. It is not meant to be a pet."

You knew where this was headed, and you didn't like the way it was going to end.

"But 'Mione, I can take care of him. After all, he's only a child. I could train him to obey my commands and maybe he could protect Hogwarts one day."

"Y/N, magical creatures are not permitted to even be at Hogwarts. Much less protect it."

"Well, I can't just let him into the wild. He'll die on his own. I have to protect him. I promised Hagrid I would."

"I'm sorry Y/N, you have to let it -him- fine, you have to let him go. It's far too risky to keep him here."

She watched as you looked down at the dragon while a saddened expression. She thought her eyes were playing tricks on her, but she swore the dragon looked up at you sadly as well. The dragon turned its gaze toward her and shook its -his- head disappointedly. Hermione let out a soft gasp at this movement and then looked into you eyes, which were still focused on the dragon. Tears were building on your eyelids which caused Hermione's chest to ache. Hermione hated it when you cried, and she hated it even more now especially since she was the reason. For once, Hermione decided to let her heart speak instead of her mind.

"That is unless you had some help."

You looked up at her astounded. Dare you even think that your Hermione was a rule breaker. Your ears were hanging on every word as she continued.

"It would be hard to take care of a dragon, but I'm sure I could ask Harry or Ron to help us. They could probably help get him food or any other necessities. Like I said, keeping him will be a risk but I'm sure we'll manage. Perhaps I could visit the library for a book on dragons. I'm sure they'll have something on -Mmph."

Hermione couldn't finish her sentence with your lips eagerly catching hers. She kissed back after recovering from her shock, but pulled away when she felt something crawl into her lap. She stared down at the dragon, which appeared to be smiling, trying not to make any sudden movements. The dragon curled up in her lap and shut his eyes escaping to the land of dreams. You giggled at Hermione's still panicked expression.

"I think he likes you." you said, peppering kisses on Hermione's face.

"Y/N," she whispered. "Get him off of me."

"But he's comfortable." She glared at you. "Fine, plus I better take him to my dormancy anyways. After all, I think Quidditch practice is over, and the last thing I want is for the whole Gryffindor team to see him"

You gently picked him up and placed him in the box on the floor. You closed the box, placed a kiss on Hermione's forehead, and exited out of the portrait hole before the Quidditch players arrived. Hermione closed her potions book since her mind wandered elsewhere. She had a lot of planning to do in order to make sure your dragon would be able to live at Hogwarts. She wasn't complaining, though. All she wanted was to see you happy.

A/N: Sorry for being inactive I've been struggling to write because my homework has been keeping me busy. Hopefully, that will change.
