honeymoon stage

I wake up a few hours before my alarm clock goes off and I sit up and look around at the dark room before me. I press snooze on the alarm clock while going downstairs.

I turn on the lights in the kitchen while trying to find something to eat.

"Hey." A voice behind me says as I jump. I turn around to see Jake before turning back around without saying a word.

"Hey Ashley." He says again as I get out some food to make breakfast. "What's wrong?" He walks over to me and tries to grab my face but I stop him.

"Don't." I walk away and over to the stove.

"Listen I'm sorry about last night ok? I just got caught up in my work and didn't realize the time."

"No don't apologize I'm fine. I told myself I wouldn't wait up for you and I did. I told myself to trust you and I can't so I guess we're even."

"Ashley you can trust me."

"If you weren't going to make it home in time you could've just said that, you didn't have to get my hopes up."

"I didn't mean to. I really thought I would be home in time. We could try again tonight."

"No thank you. Who knows you might forget to look at a thing called a clock."

"Really Ashley?"

"Really Jake." I start to cook while completely ignoring his presence.

"What has it been like two weeks since we've spent real time together."

"Yep." It's really been two weeks. Tomorrow marks the day Jake and I have been together for a month. He probably doesn't even remember that.

"I really really miss you." I miss him too but I'm not telling him that. We wouldn't have to miss each other if he knew how to treat people like a priority whether than a chore.

"Yea." I say while placing the food on a plate.

"So um you working today?" He bites a piece of bacon and it's only now that I realize he's only wearing sweats.

I never would've thought a man in sweat pants without a shirt eating bacon would turn me on.

"Yea but as usual I'm working at home."

"Why won't you let me take you out tonight?"

"Because you're not going to. You always do this but you never show and I'm always waiting up like an idiot."

"You're not an idiot."

"I know. That's why I'm not waiting up for you like one anymore."

"Work is something I have to go to."

"You don't think I have a job I need to do. Even when I go in I make time for people if I want to."

"It's not like that Ashley. It's just I've been talking to a lot of people and closing a lot of deals. Calling off doesn't seem reasonable."

"Fine." I say while throwing our plates in the sink and starting to walk off. I refuse to let him anger me anymore. If he doesn't care, neither do I.

"Ashley how about we just start over?" He asks as I'm about to walk up the stairs.

"And how exactly will that help us?"

"In the beginning we were great. I think people would refer to it as the honeymoon stage." I smile as he laughs. "I want that again. We've been going back and forth for weeks."
