confession

Dedicated to skyymadeitall

"You're gonna hate me." Jake confessed as he sat on the top of his desk. I had finally agreed to go into his office with him and he locked the door to 'spill the beans' that were so crucial to our future.

"More than I did when I found you cheating?" I raised an eyebrow at him and stood in place at the door. He had told me to sit down but I knew that if what he was telling me was truly bad, I'd probably slap him.

"Yes." He nodded and I knew that I didn't need to get any closer to him. "Before I tell you this I just want you to know that I called it off, Ashley. I couldn't go through with it once I found out how amazing you really are I mean you're -"

"Save the compliments, boy. What did you need to tell me?"

"Could you please have a seat? It's a long story." He pointed to the couch in front of his desk.

"Simplify the story, Jake." I snapped and he ran his hands down his face.

"I can't." He whined and went to take a seat in the chair behind his desk. "Please, sit."

I looked at him for a good 45 seconds before stomping to the couch to sit down.

"Talk." I demanded.

"I met your uncle when I went on a family trip to Australia a few years back. He and my dad clicked and he seemed like a nice guy. I didn't think he noticed me because he was always with my dad but he did notice me. He told my dad that I was a bright kid and that he would love to work with me someday."

"He eventually got back in contact with me when we came back to America and he became my mentor. He didn't tell me much about his background but he did tell me about you. He told me about that asshole Austin that you were dating at the time. He told me that he hadn't seen you genuinely happy ever since you were younger."

"He told me that if I could give you that happiness back, he'd pay me half a million dollars."

I put my hand up to stop him. I couldn't believe what I had just heard. My uncle treated me like a fúcking bet.

"You agreed, of course. You couldn't miss out on that much money, right?" I asked Jake and he seemed as though he was at a loss for words.

"At the time it seemed like a harmless thing to do. I didn't know you, Ash. I didn't know I would feel this way for you. I was an idiot, okay? I already know that. Looking back, I know that it's never right to be with a woman for money." He stood up and made his way towards me. "That's why I told Barry that I didn't want the money anymore. After I came back from Britain with you, I noticed something. You were so happy and full of life when you were there and I loved seeing that. I loved seeing that for free."

"If my uncle set all of this up then why was he mad when he thought we were together?"

"It was all a part of the plan, my love. I'm sorry." I ignored him and took out my phone to call my uncle. "What are you doing?"

"I'm calling Barry to get to the bottom of this." Jake looked as if he wanted to protest but when he saw my face he decided against it. Barry finally answered on the third ring.
