that night

"Wake up!" Kirsten yells while smacking me with a pillow.

"No. I need to sleep." I mumble while placing myself under the blankets for protection from this crazy woman.

"You need to get up, Ashley." I sigh.

"I need more sleep."

"Maybe you should have slept last night instead of staying up and binge watching the same episodes of the same shows."

"There was nothing good on!" I protest.

"I don't really care." She plops down on the bed. "I don't like this." I sit up.

"What?"

"This." She points to waves at me. "You don't do anything but lay in the bed all day."

"That's not true. I get up to use the bathroom and to eat. I also have work that I get up to do."

"It's the weekend. We need to go out and do something. I feel like a pair of old women who sit at home all day."

"I really don't feel like going out anywhere. Or out to see anyone."

"I hate seeing you like this. It's really pissing me off. Get your lazy ass up and put on some clothes!" She yells while smacking my leg.

"Ow!" I kick her. "Fine. Let's say I agree to go out with you today. Where would we go?"

"I know the perfect place." She claps her hands.

"Not a club."

"Come on and loosen up." She pushes my shoulder.

"You already know how I feel about clubs. You of all people should know that."

"Ashley come on. We're older. You're birthday is coming up."

"In like five months."

"Three."

"It doesn't matter anyway. It's not gonna feel that special. Who cares anyway?"

"Sometimes I wish I had a pot of hot grits to pour on you. I really wish you would stop acting like people didn't care about you. I mean if I didn't care about you I wouldn't let you stay here."

"I know." I sigh.

"Then stop being so sad."

"I can't. I miss it."

"What?"

"Him. I miss Jake." I look over at my phone. "I don't know why."

"Maybe because despite the fact that you don't want to admit it, you really care about him." She grabs my phone from the nightstand.

"How many?"

"452 messages and 84 misses calls."

"Should I call or text back?"

"I don't know. You two were so cute together but he betrayed your trust. Do you think you could trust him again?"

"I don't know." I think for a while. "Maybe going out tonight will help my take my mind off of him."
