It was barely dusk when Nova found herself sitting next to a burnt out fire, the smell of smoke intertwining with the fabric of her clothes.
"You're up early?" Bellamy spoke softly, taking a seat next to the brunette on the ground.
"My tents became a little cramped." Nova said with a wry smile.
"Octavias moved in then?"
"Yes. She failed to tell me that she kicks in her sleep."
"Just wait until she starts sleep walking." Bellamy smiled.
A comfortable silence fell among the pair.
"So Wells is dead then, Grounders?" Nova asked somewhat solemnly, she was never close to Wells but had a soft spot for the boy, maybe because he was nothing like her father or showed her undeniable kindness.
"Yeah, it was the grounders, we have to watch our backs." Bellamy said with a regal tone."Thank you....for looking out for her by the way." The eldest Blake spoke quietly.
A small smile played onto Novas lips.
"No problem. It's nice to have a Blake around that I actually like." Nova smiled, arousing a scoff from Bellamy.
Nova nudged Blake playfully with her shoulder, hiding a mischievous smile."Morning sunshine" Nova spoke loudly, tearing into her now occupied tent to wake up a sleeping Octavia.
"Ugh, 5 more minutes."
Nova looked at Octavias unmoving frame, deciding what her tactic should be.
After a few moments of deliberating, Nova dived on top of Octavia, with a smile of triumph.
"Get off, you smell like smoke." Octavia insulted, trying to hide her smile.
"Well you smell like self pity. So get up."
The brunette rose to her feet reluctantly with a half smirk, half scowl.
"So...what's the plan for the day?" Octavia asked, stretching her limbs.
A wide grin appeared on Novas face, "I'm thinking we cause some trouble."
The grin was immediately reflected onto Octavias features."So, do you know the plan?" Nova whispered to Octavia as they bobbed and weaved among the other delinquents. Silently, trying to go unnoticed.
"You rig the wires while I set up the mud plate."
"When your brother walks into his tent, he'll get a face full of Mother Nature."
Octavia and Nova laughed mischievously at each other as they came closer and closer to the largest tent among the camp. The duo sprung into action once at the tent, ready to set their trap.
However, three pairs of curious eyes stared at Octavia and Nova.
Jasper, Bellamy and Clarke stood solemnly around a make-shift table with a glazed look of defeat."He...hey guys. Wazz up...?" Nova said awkwardly, both her and Octavia hiding wires and tubs of wet compost behind their backs.
"What's that?" Clarke asked, pointing to the supply's they attempted to hide.
"Oh this...just...mechanic stuff...Octavia wanted a lesson on the basics." Nova lied, turning to Octavia for help.
"Yeah..I always wanted to be able to do all that mechanic.... stuff."
"Since when?" Bellamy questioned with crossed arms and a frown."Anyway...what's with all the long faces?" Nova asked, quickly changing the topic.
"We found the weapon that killed Wells..it was made out of metal from the drop ship." Clarke uttered sadly.
A look was passed between Octavia and Nova. They picked the wrong time to pull a prank."So a grounder didn't kill Wells. It was one of us." Nova acknowledged, walking closer to the other juveniles.
"So there's a murderer in the camp?" Jasper asked.
"There's more than one murderer in this camp." Bellamy spat.
"And some of the happen to be quite attractive." Nova smirked, attempting to ease the tension. Octavia laughed but quickly stifled it into a cough."We need to keep this quiet." Bellamy said, sending Nova and Octavia a dubious look.
"Like hell we do."
Clarke stormed towards the exit in a fit of fury, only to be stopped by a much stronger Bellamy.
"Get out of my way Bellamy."
"Be smart about this. Look at what we've achieved. The wall. Patrols. Like it or not, people thinking the Grounders killed Wells is good for us."
"Good for you, you mean. What? Keep people afraid so they'll work for you?"
"Yeah, that's it. It's good for all of us. Besides, what are you going to do? Walk out there and ask who killed Wells? You don't even know who's knife it is."
"Really? J.M. John Murphy. The people have a right to know."
At the name of Novas friend, she sprang into action, stepping in front of Clarke.
"You so much as take a step out of this tent Clarke, I'll make you wish you hadn't." Nova smiled. The fire in her eyes making up for the height difference.
Clarke stuttered, she had never heard Nova speak like this, it was intimidating.
"I'm sorry." Clarke said, pushing past Nova who was shaking with fury and doubt."You son of a bitch!" Clarke burst out of the tent, pushing Murphy away.
Nova instantly ran to Murphy's side, ready to help if needed.
"Clarke! Lay off!" She yelled back, taking a protective step in front of her prison buddy.
"What the hell is your problem?!" Murphy asks unknowingly.
"Recognise this?" Clarke said, waving the knife in the air.
"That's my knife. Where'd you find it?"
"Where you dropped it after you killed Wells." Clarke fired back.
"The Grounders killed Wells. Not me."
"I know what you did. You're going to pay for it." Clarke sneered.
"Bellamy, you really believe this crap?"
Nova didn't. She and Murphy have had to many midnight conversations to know if he was capable of murder. Murphy might be many things but he's not a killer.
"You threatened to kill him. We all saw you. You hated Wells." Clarke began again.
"Everyone hated Wells Clarke. Doesn't mean they want to drive a carving knife through his chest." Nova returned.
"But he's the only one who got in a knife fight with him." Clarke spat.
"I didn't kill him then either. Come on. This is ridiculous. I don't have to answer to you. I don't have to answer to anyone."
"Come again?" Bellamy questioned."Bellamy, I'm telling you, I didn't do this." Murphy pleaded, making Nova wince away.
"They found his fingers on the ground with your knife."
Silence."Is this the kind of society we want? You say there should be know rules, does that mean we can just kill each other without punishment?"
"I already told you, I didn't kill anyone." Murphy defended.
" I say we float him!" Someone from the onlooking crowd jeered.
Nova reached out and clasped Murphy's hand in her own. They were shaking but he didn't pull away."That's not what I'm saying." Clarke responded to the boy.
"Why not? He deserves to float."
"You can't float someone on the ground dumbass." Nova spat.
"Who asked you, slut."
"Watch you mouth." Bellamy warned, surprising himself and Nova. The boy looked taken back but proceeded anyway. "It's justice."
"Revenge isn't justice." Clarke began to squirm.
"Float him. Float him. Float him." A chant began to fill the camp, making Murphy clutch Novas hand tight, threatening to cut off the circulation to her fingers. Where are you Finn. I need you.
"Run!" Nova mouthed to her friend.
