It was while I was I was staring at the blank tiled walls, sat on the most uncomfortable seat in the house, excreting my waste when I remembered that I was meant to be going to Zoe’s house to study with the girls for the biology test we had on Monday. We often study together because it makes it less stressful and more fun. Plus I think it’s easier because we always do stupid stuff to remember things, and it works! You remember the stupid stuff. And it’s just a little bit more fun to study with friends than on your own. I exited Instagram and opened up my messages, tapping away writing a message to Zoe
‘Hey ZoZo I’ll be there soon. Got a bit caught up this morning sorry xx’ which of course was all lies, is that bad? Oh well, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. After I finished in the bathroom I ran into my room and quickly grabbed the books I would need and shoved them along with my pencil case into a bag as I walked out of my room. I ran down the stairs, two steps at a time and repeated my usual morning rush routine of almost crashing into the wall at the bottom of the staircase. Well done Wynter, another near-miss. “Wynter what are you doing running down the stairs at a hundred miles an hour?” my mum questioned as she emerged from the kitchen. I took my hand off the doorhandle, sighed, and turned towards my mother who I knew wouldn’t let me go without interrogation. I looked at my mum. She had her arms crossed “Mum, I’m just going to study with the girls, and I’m late” I said, slowly moved my hand back to the doorhandle and started to unlock it “okay?”. Mum just walked back into the kitchen so I unlocked the door and hurriedly walked to my car.
When I got to Zoe’s house Scarlett’s car was parked outside. I stopped the car behind hers and walked up to the front door. As I lifted my clenched fist to the door to knock, it opened. Stood behind it was Mrs T, Zoe’s mum. “Good morning Wynter!”
“Morning Mrs T.” I said nervously. How did she know I was at the door before I knocked?
“Oh don’t sound so scared! I saw you walking up the driveway from the kitchen, and please Wynter you don’t have to call me Mrs T,” she said, almost as if she had read my mind “the girls are in Zoe’s bedroom, you know where that is.” She finished as I entered the house. “Thanks” I smiled.
Mrs T walked away, back to kitchen I presume. I shut the door and took off my shoes. Zoe’s house has always scared me, not because it’s scary, but because everything is immaculate and clean and perfect. I’m always scared that I’ll ruin something or break something.
I walked up the stairs towards Zoe’s room. There was the sound of a door shutting further up the hallway which made me jump, my head turning sharply towards the noise. It was Louis; Zoe’s older brother, the school jock. He just stood there staring at me. Weird. I smiled at him and quickly went into Zoe’s room, shutting the door behind me. “About time you showed up!” Scarlett exclaimed, I just rolled my eyes and sat down on the king size bed that Scarlett and Zoe were already sat on. “Zoe, is Louis okay?” I asked her
“Yeah, why?” she replied, not even looking up from looking at her nails.
“He was just out in the hallway; I thought it was kind of weird of him to be standing out there.” There was a short silence. “Anyway, where’s Marla?” I asked as I got my books out.
“She said she couldn’t make it.” Scarlett answered.
“Well it wa-”
“She was with Shaun Valenci last night; she’s probably fucked this morning.” Zoe interrupted me.
Friday nights are Marla’s busiest nights of the week, closely followed by Saturday.
Minutes of studying, laughing and chatting soon turned into hours, and it was soon mid-afternoon. My brain was like mush. “Hey we should go to The Coffee House; I could do with a coffee and some fresh air.” I suggested.
“Sounds good to me!” A rather enthusiastic Zoe answered as she was already up and getting her bag,
“Alright,” Scarlett agreed “I’ll drive.”
We left the house and climbed into Scarlett’s scarlet red Ford Focus Fiesta; her parents thought it would be a good idea to get Scarlett a scarlet coloured car. Scarlett on the other hand wasn’t so keen on it but now she doesn’t care, it’s just her parents’ sense of humour. We got to the coffee shop, ordered out usuals and sat down on the mini couch seats we always sit on. We should almost put a ‘RESERVED’ sign on that table we come here that much. There was a boy hunched over in a chair in the corner of the café. He looked familiar, but I don’t know where I recognised him from. So I was just staring at him. Scarlett must have seen him too, or seen me looking at him. “Is that-” she started “Zayn Malik?” Zoe said.
“Yeah. How did you know?” Scarlett asked sounding puzzled.
“I saw him when we walked in. He’s been hanging around Louis though for some reason.” She picked up her coffee.
“I’ve never seen them hanging together.” I joined in
Zoe put her coffee down again and licked off the milk moustache she had and explained “that’s because they see each other outside of school. I don’t know why Louis is making friends with him. He’s gross.” She finished with a disgusted look on her face. I was really confused at this point. Our school has a super weird gamer/druggie/freak group who nobody associates with; they are literally the most unpopular of the unpopulars. Zayn is one of them.
Something didn’t seem right to me; Louis standing in the hallway staring at me with no expression on his face, and now he’s mixing with Zayn.
We drank our coffees and headed back to Zoe’s house. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Marla. ‘is it too late to study with you? Needing some girl company x’ I quickly texted her back ‘we’re just going back to Zoe’s, meet us there if you want xx’ When Marla says ‘needing some girl company’ it usually means her telling us all about her previous night and we wouldn’t be getting any more studying done, luckily we’d done most of it. When we got back to Zoe’s Marla was already there. She got out the car with a huge smile on her face and a huge amount of enthusiasm, her curls bouncing off her shoulders as she walked towards us. “Hey!” I greeted her as she engulfed me in a hug squeezing me half to death. The four of us went inside and up to Zoe’s room. Just as I predicted, Marla wanted to recite her night to us, I sat there and looked like I was listening. Believe me, there’s some things you’d rather know about your best friends and their sexual activity is one of them, and I’d rather not know things about all the boys she’s made love to.
At 6 o’clock I had to go home because my family had guests coming over, so I left the others to it. “Hi Mum” I said as I put my keys and bag down.
“Good, you didn’t forget,” Mum said. As if I could forget when Mum and Dad had been going on about this dinner all week “be a doll would you Wynter and chop those veggies up while I do this.” Mum nodded her head in the direction of the vegetables. Once I had finished that I went and changed into something a little more dinner appropriate and did my makeup that I hadn’t bothered to do that morning because of the rush I was in.
My sister and I sat at the table making faces at each other (unseen), and playing footsies under the table. Towards the end of the dinner I was almost asleep in my seat. I was struggling to keep my eyes open, and it wasn’t even that late. Thankfully it wasn’t too much longer before our guests left and I was able to go to bed and I fell asleep almost as soon as I put my head down. Sweet dreams to me!
