" It had to be zombies." Joelee murmured to herself as she ran quickly after the rest of her group.

" They're not zombies." Kevin snapped as he ran up to another door, throwing it open as he bolted into the safety of the new room before he paused to turn around and glare at Joelee.

" They're literally visibly decaying. They're zombies!" Joelee exclaimed as she followed Kevin through the door, holding it open for everyone else until they all got into the room.

" They're defects. They're experiments like us who couldn't take to the serums the way we do. It's basically melting them from the inside. They start losing memories first, then their humanity... Then they just forget everything except infecting others with what they have."  Kevin muttered as he flipped a large lock on the door behind Joelee before hurrying away.

" So... Like zombies." Joelee arched her eyebrows as Kevin released a loud sigh.

" No. They're... Fine. Yes. They're zombies." Kevin snapped after a moment, causing Joelee to nod seriously as she followed closely behind the ginger haired male.

" I knew it." Joelee said solemnly which made Kevin sigh loudly before quickly going silent as the defects began to slam against the door roughly.

" So... They're infectious? Are they still technically alive?" Joelee questioned as she eyed the door behind them warily, staying near the back of the group to make sure that nobody got left behind.

" They're just sick... There's no cure for it right now but... I don't know how to actually answer your question. Nobody actually knows. I don't think the process can be reversed." Kevin replied after a moment, pausing for a moment to contemplate his answer before continuing.

" From what I've seen... It's like... At first they seem fine... But then not even a few minutes later they're tired and seem to be less capable of holding a conversation without forgetting what they were saying or just not knowing how to reply. It doesn't take very long to notice that they're super pale, they have a super high fever and almost appear as if they forget how to talk. It attacks your brain first, causing amnesia, paranoia, and sometimes seizures." Kevin explained as they ducked into another room just as a loud bang was heard behind them from the door finally being forced open.

Kevin ignored the sound as they all began to pick up the pace, not wanting to have their brains turn to goop.

" How do you know all of this?" Esther questioned suspiciously as she kept close to Rachel, not wanting to be too far away from her sister as she glanced at Kevin out of her peripheral.

" I'm friends with a few scientists here. A lot of them come to me as a therapist of sorts... I literally have no idea why, though. All I'm good at is listening.... I give terrible advice. I think it's because not a lot of people contained here or working here are willing to listen without any ulterior motive." Kevin replied as he took a moment to glance back at Rachel and Esther before he quickly looked away again.

" Continue with what you were saying. About the defects." Rachel urged him as she fiddled with the hem of her shirt awkwardly.

" Uh... I think from what I've been told... They actually unlocked the mutant gene a lot sooner than they thought but a few tests with it deemed it unstable. Apparently you have to have a very specific... Something. Not to mention, I think it didn't have a stabilizer for the gene. This experimental strand was one a scientist named Doyle tampered with. Apparently he figured that since the serum did give people mild examples of what appeared to be powers he just needed to create something to stabilize the serum and make it more potent at the same time." Kevin paused for a moment as he glanced into the hallway cautiously before he quickly ducked through the door as he began to walk quickly down the long, almost completely dark, hallway.
