Not one of my best, but it's kind of cute.

"Yeah. I can get those to you. There's some on the trail around my house," you say.

"Wonderful! Can I have them by tomorrow?"

"Yeah. No problem,"

"Thank you, Y/N, bye now," Sarah's voice says before the phone clicks into a dial tone. You place your phone down on the kitchen counter and place the spaghetti in the microwave, warming it for a minute. You made it an hour ago.

Jared was supposed to be here at one. It's nearly two fifteen.

You head into your room and change out of your nice dress and into hiking gear. You bring along a backpack with a notebook, a plastic bag, an anemometer, a few pH strips and other scientific supplies. You tie your hair back.

Your phone rings.

Your heart lifts when you reach for it: but it's not Jared.

It's your best friend, Megan.

You pick up the phone, "Hey Megan"

"Is he there?" she asks immediately.

"No."

"He's almost two hours late!" she squeals.

"It's fine."

"No. No, it's not. I'm coming over. I'm coming over and we're eating ice cream and watching Mean Girls," she says.

"As much as I would love to pretend I was seventeen again, I have to collect samples for work," you say, grabbing water out of the pantry.

"It's so unfair. Your boyfriend should be there for you. But he's not," Megan cries.

"When I started dating him, I knew he'd be away a lot," you say, throwing some gloves into your bag.

"Yeah, but you don't even know where he is. He could be with other girls,"

"I don't think so. He's just not like he used to be. He's more famous now with his new movie having come out," you say, "He doesn't really have time for me."

"All boyfriends need to be punctual. Or half-punctual. They can't just blow you off like that," Megan says, in a more calm voice, "Are you going to break up with him?"

"What?! No!" you cry, heading back into your room, "Just because he isn't here doesn't mean I'm going to break up with him."

"But you deserve so much better, Y/N," she says.

"Maybe I do. Maybe I don't. But I made a commitment to him," you say, throwing in a flashlight.

"How long has it been since you guys......you know....did
It?"

"Made love? God, Megan, it doesn't matter. Listen, I really have to go. Sorry."

"Alright. Just remember what I said," she says, as you click the end button. You sigh. As much as you love Jared, you wish he was here. He's always somewhere. Somewhere but here.

You finish tying your shoes in your bedroom.

Suddenly you hear Jared's faint voice in the distance, "Yeah. Listen, I'm going to have to call you back. I'm joining my girlfriend for lunch."
