i've been listening to Sleeping At Last to get me in the mood. help.

-

tyler:

it's tuesday morning.

the day they inject poison.

i picked you up.

you were terrified of what was going to happen in there.

"it's going to be okay." i said

"i hope so."

***

the room was empty and quiet.

sobs filled the air.

"it's going to be okay." i reminded.

you started coughing.

there was blood this time.

i helped you walk towards the sink.

you were really light.

and weak.

i gave you a cup of water.

you rinsed your mouth.

blood and saliva went down the drain.

you looked up at me.

you smiled even though you were scared.

your smile made everything feel better.

even though it wasn't.

***

a nurse came in.

she asked you to lay down on the bed.

you did.

you laid on your side, facing me.

your eyes said it all;

im scared.

"i know."

"hello, im catherine. i will be in charge of you and your therapies for the next few weeks."

"hello"

"you are jenna, correct?"

"yes" you answered.

"and you are tyler. okay, well what will happen today is i will give you three chemo injections in three different places. your chest, ribs and arms. afterwards, you are required to take an oxygen tank everywhere you go."

"okay."

i watched and observed.

"would you like to do your arms, ribs or chest first?"

"arms first."

"okay. well you're in perfect position."

"tyler, can you hold my hand?" you asked with a shaking voice.

"of course."

"okay, it's going to hurt for a bit then you'll be a bit numb. don't worry, it's all part of the process."

"okay."

i starred into your eyes.

"3...2...1"

she inserted the needle in your arm.

you grind your teeth in pain.

i watched.

you shut your eyes closed.

once you opened them, you had wet tears covering them.

"it hurts like hell," you whispered to me.

"just two more okay? you'll get through this, i believe in you."

"okay can you turn the other way now? i'll have to insert the second shot in your ribs."

"yeah okay"

you let go of my hand.

switching sides to the other, wincing.

i couldn't do anything besides watch you in pain.

"3...2...1"

"ouch"

"i know. the second one hurt more than the first, its usual."

"okay last one. for this one, i'll need you to lay down flat."

catherine adjusted the bed.

you looked up at the ceiling, catherine hovering over you.

she lifted your shirt, exposing your skin.

"last one. 3...2...1"

you clenched your fisted.

"you're all done."

"is it going to be like this for the next few weeks?"

"unfortunately, yes."

you sighed.

"i have to go get the oxygen tank. you stay here."

"okay."

i stood up, holding your hand.

"it hurts."

"i know."

"im going to die in pain."

"dont say that. you're going to live, i know you will."

***

the nurse came back in, this time with the tank.

"now, this is what you will be taking everytwhere you go, okay?"

"okay." your voice was weak.

"this is the handle," she pointed, "and this is the the mask. the mask goes over your mouth and nose, making it easier to breath."

"what if i start coughing?"

"don't worry, it will still give you oxygen, but your other problem is the blood. we prescribed pills for you. these are it."

she opened her hand, exposing the orange bottle of pills.

"you take one every 6 hours. if you start to cough up blood, you are suppose to rinse it out with water. okay?"

"okay."

"tyler, may you hold these for her?"

"sure."

i placed your pills in my jacket.

"now, i need you to stand up in order to put the mask on you."

i helped you stand up, trying not to hurt you.

catherine placed the mask on.

you took your first breath in it.

"you okay?" i asked.

you nodded.

"you two can go home now, your therapies will be every tuesday."

"same time?"

"yes."

"thank you." you said.

she smiled.
