Chapter 10 | Focus
"Then where did you sleep last night?" I asked, astonished that he didn't return home. Why wouldn't he want to go home and sleep in his own bed?
"I just didn't feel like going home so I slept in my car," he answered.
"Oh, you didn't want to go home to see your parents or sleep in your own bed?" I curiously asked.
I know that I can't sleep without knowing Shane is safe and okay. If he was at a party, I would lightly sleep keeping an eye out as to when he would come home. I can only imagine how worried his parents must have been.
"I'm not that close to my parents," he mumbled, his gaze remaining on the ground.
I knew how it felt to not be close to your parents. I wasn't close to mine at all. It has always just been me and Shane at home, and it's not the same telling your brother secrets than it would be to telling a mom. That's why I was extremely thankful for Sadie, she was the closest thing I have to a sister.
"I'm not either," I admitted, relating to him.
"It's not the same," he muttered softly as if those words weren't for me to hear.
The boy standing in front of me wasn't someone that I was familiar with. He was soft and vulnerable. The Raysen I knew was cold hearted and playful.
"So where are we going to study today?" he asked, changing the subject.
"The library?" I questioned, raising one eyebrow at him.
He scrunched his nose in disgust but didn't say anything.
"Please?" I begged.
Last night was a close call. I can't have Shane finding out about who I'm tutoring just yet. We just ended the night of good terms, I don't want to jeopardize that.
"Fine."
"Thank you!" I exclaimed.
Sadie's backpack stood out to me in the hall. I haven't told her anything about last night yet.
"Bye, Raysen! See you later," I muttered before running over to my best friend.
"Hey, bestie!"
"Good morning," she chirped, stuffing a bite of her McFlurry in her mouth.
"Really? Ice cream in the morning?" I questioned.
She nodded her head. "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day you know," she informed me.
I rolled my eyes at her. Of course, only my best friend would be the one to answer like that.
"So I've been told," I laughed.
"You didn't tell me about your date last night?" Sadie pestered.
"It wasn't a date! It was a tutor session," I clarified.
"Whatever, same thing."
"Anyways, let's just say that studying at my house is something we're not going to do again."
"Why? Did things get heated?" She asked, opening her eyeballs wide at me.
"No!" I exclaimed way too loudly.
"Your tone says otherwise," she teased.
I mentally facepalmed myself. I don't qualify bandaging him up as things getting "heated". My eyes seeing him shirtless, now that's a whole different story.
"Now, you're being way too quiet. Something did happen last night!" she yelled.
I covered her mouth with my hand so she couldn't say anything louder than she already had. I felt her lick the palm of my hand, which made me pull away immediately.
"Sadie!" I exclaimed.
"It's called freedom of speech, honey."
"Nothing happened," I answered her again, this time with a confident voice.
She shook her head at me and chuckled. "It's like the words that are coming out of your mouth are just lies after lies."
What she was saying was true. I did see Raysen shirtless and help him with his wounds, but that doesn't mean anything. I was doing it to help a friend in need. We did actually do his math homework after all. So it wasn't technically a lie.
"Fine," I groaned.
Sadie clapped her hands in excitement. "So why can't you guys study at your house anymore?"
"Shane knew there was someone in my room, but didn't know who. It was a close call," I explained to her.
"Jade! You have to be more careful or even better, just tell him the truth before he finds out himself. You know how much that's going to hurt him when he knows you've been hiding this for a long time."
"Yeah, I know," I hung my head in shame.
Shane would get mad either way. He doesn't like Raysen at all, and I don't know why. It's not to be spoken of for some odd reason.
"You better tell him before it's too late," she said.
I sighed knowing the truth. I should tell him before this gets too far, I mean he's my twin, so he should understand right? Tutoring him isn't a big deal, it's not like we're dating or anything.
---
When the last bell of the day rang, I headed to my locker to grab my supplies for the tutoring session with Raysen at the library. I wish I could do this in my own room, but sadly, I can't.
I pulled out my phone to text Raysen before I left.
Jade: I'm going home to change first, I'll meet you there.
A few seconds later I got a text back from him saying "Okay, I'll be there soon."
Walking out of the school, I saw his familiar shadow walking side by side with a girl standing next to him. I've seen her before in my class, I think her name was Mia or something like that.
"Hey, Raysen!" I called out from afar.
The two turned around now facing me. The blonde girl whipped her hair around her shoulder and looked at me with curiosity.
"Maybe instead of focusing on getting girl's numbers, you should focus on getting A's."
Raysen looked taken back at my comment. It was really just a spur of the moment thing. The words just fell out of my mouth without even filtering it in my head first. I have to admit, though, my choice of words were pretty accurate.
Mia isn't the first girl I've seen him with. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I've seen him with half the cheer squad.
