Chapter 19 | Talking?
It's been a week and a half since I last spoke to Shane. Our family dinners would consist of listening to our parents talk about how their day went and what it consisted of. Shane and I didn't speak, we just sat there in silence, eating our food.
Our arguments have never been this intense before. We would usually fight over the stupidest things, like whose turn it was to wash the dishes or take Ollie out for a walk, but it would be resolved quickly after. It was never this bad, to the point we would stop communicating.
I didn't really know what was going on in his life right now either. How was football practices going? Was he talking to any girls? It's not like he would've told me those things if I didn't ask, but I'd like the option of knowing that I could.
Raysen on the other hand, I haven't really been talking to him either. I didn't want to add fuel to the fire. Once in awhile, I'd send him a text, checking up on him, but I haven't spoken to him face to face since we were in the hospital.
"Hey, Jade! Ready for lunch?" Mia asked, linking her arm into mine.
"When am I not ready for lunch?" I joked.
It was true, my love for food was truly one of a kind.
We took a seat in our regular spot in the cafeteria, two tables away from the football boys. I could see Shane shooting daggers at Raysen, who was fooling around on the steps leading to the stage.
Mia followed my gaze to my brother and nodded her head.
"How's he holding up with this whole situation?" she asked.
"We're still not on talking terms," I muttered, taking a bite from my sandwich I quickly packed this morning.
"I was talking to him earlier-" she started.
"You were talking to my brother?" I cut her off.
"Yeah, I was talking to him earlier, and it sounds like he misses talking to you, Jade," she explained.
"Did he tell you the part where he said your cousin would hurt me if I spent more time with him?"
"No," she dragged out.
"Why were you talking to him anyway?" I asked out of curiosity.
"We just- we kind of started talking after the sleepover," she confessed.
My jaw dropped open. Did I hear that correctly?
"Talking? Like "talking " talking?" I repeated.
She nodded her head at me and half smiled.
"Does he know you're related to Raysen?" I asked, still choking on my own words.
I would have never thought that Mia and Shane would have ever started talking. The news was actually blowing my mind through the rooftops. That has got to be the unexpected turn of the day.
"Yeah, he wasn't really fond of it, I mean he still isn't, but it doesn't really seem to be bothering him when we talk."
"Oh."
"So, how are you and Raysen?" she asked.
"I haven't really talked to him lately. I want to, but it won't help with the whole Shane drama," I explained.
She nodded her head, "Yeah, I get it. You should just try and talk to Shane though, it might turn out better than expected."
"Yeah, maybe."
---
I opened the door to my house only to find the sweet aroma of brownies filling my nose. "Those smell good," I muttered to myself, closing the door behind me.
Shane peeked his head out of the kitchen to see who came in the front door. When his eyes landed on me, they immediately looked away went back to whatever he was doing in the kitchen.
I placed my bag down on the couch and turned on the TV.
"So, I hear you and Mia are talking now," I spoke, breaking the week and a half's worth of silence.
I heard some metal trays clatter from the kitchen. My head whips around to see Shane coming out, looking intensely at me.
"Did she tell you that?" he asked, wiping his hands on his shirt.
"Yup," I answered shortly.
There was an awkward silence that one again filled the room.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, a little too harshly.
Shane obviously took it the wrong way, because I could see him clenching his jaw. He scoffed at my question and shook his head.
"You mean exactly how you told me about Raysen?" he raised his voice.
"That's different! She's one of my best friends, don't you think I should know if my brother is flirting with her or not? Don't you think you should've checked if it was okay with me first?"
"You didn't check if I was okay with Raysen first!" he yelled.
"That's because I knew the answer to it already-"
"Yet you still did it!" he cut me off.
"I didn't know feelings would come attached," I admitted.
"That's who he is, Jade! You can't see through that, but I can. I know those types of guys and trust me, you don't want them."
"He's not like that when he's around me though."
"Why are you being so stubborn? He's just going to hurt you, and I don't want to see you go through that."
Shane looked at me with such concern. "Can you please tell me the story about Angie?" I asked.
He shook his head. "If you really want to know, ask him. Then come to me when he's told you."
I sighed and let him go back to baking his brownies. My feet brought me to my room, where I flopped down on my bed and stared at the ceiling.
Was Raysen going to hurt me? Could Shane be right about this whole thing?
I shook my head and my own thoughts. I didn't want to be heartbroken again. My heart couldn't stand the pain if it were to get ripped in two again. Hopefully, it was just all in my head and things wouldn't turn out to be that bad.
