Chapter 26 | Secrets Revealed

Ray's POV

Lunch was usually my favorite part of the school day. I would get to about random things with my friends and just mess around without anybody caring. Sometimes the boys would take it way too far, and today was just one of those days.

"So, how's it going with Jade?" one of the guys asked me.

"It's okay."

"Did you guys get all mushy?" they teased.

"Are you whipped?"

A bunch more of the comments came through for the last five minutes, leaving me there picking at my food.

A distinct voice peered through all the other voices. "Did she say she loves you yet?"

My eyes met his. Mike Warner, a guy that I should have never had any interaction with.

I chose not to answer his question. I knew what the outcome would be if I did.

"Come on, Pierce, you know the deal."

I sighed. He was talking way too loud for my liking. I was afraid that someone would overhear what we were talking about, and that was the last thing I wanted.

"Fine, yes, she said it the other day."

He smirked. "Brilliant."

"I actually love her back, believe it or not," I argued.

"I don't care, you wanted revenge on her brother, you have to break her heart. It's part of the deal. And when you do, you'll be ahead on the leaderboard."

I shook my head. "I don't give a damn about the leaderboard anymore, Mike!"

There were faint whispers around us from the surrounding tables. I ran my hands over my face.

"Really? That's not what you said in the beginning," he argued.

By this time, the whole cafeteria went quiet. Jade wasn't anywhere nearby. She texted me before, saying that she was spending lunch in one of her classes to get ahead on work.

"It doesn't matter what I said in the beginning. What matters is how I feel for her now."

He laughed. "You really are whipped. What happened to just dating her to get back and Shane? What about your point system about who can get the most girls to fall for them? Do those not matter anymore?"

I shook my head no. "Not to me. Not anymore."

There were a lot of gasps around the room. It was horrible. Everyone knew what my horrible intentions were. The last thing I want for right now is for Jade to find out.

I stormed out of the cafeteria to get away from the scene. James followed me out and sat me down on a bench.

"That was crossing the line, bro. You don't mess with a girl's feelings like that," he lectured me.

James didn't know about the deal or the point system. He chose to mind his own business most of the time. To be honest, that's what I should have done too. Boy, do I regret it.

"You don't think I know that?" I shouted back. "How bad do you think it is?"

He sighed. "Pretty bad, if I'm being honest."

I ran my hands over my face. My deepest secret is now going to be revealed to the girl I love.

How could I be so stupid?

"What are you going to do?" he asked, sitting next to me.

I shrugged. "Pray she doesn't find out."

"Let me ask you something. Guy to guy."

I nodded my head at him.

"Did you really love her? Or was it just for revenge?"

I shook my head. "It was for revenge at first, but when she took care of me, I realized that it was so much more than that. I really did love her, James. You believe me, don't you?"

"It doesn't matter what I believe, what matters is if she believes you."

"What if she doesn't? What do I do then?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I don't know."

By the end of the day, the whole school was talking about it. The news spread like wildfire all around campus.

People I have never even met before started glaring at me like I was some kind of monster. To be honest, I was disappointed in myself as well. No one deserved to be treated like a game. Especially not Jade.

I was currently sitting in my last class of the day. I wasn't sure if Jade had heard the news yet. She hasn't called or texted me since lunch.

I wasn't paying attention to anything the teachers were saying in my classes. The only thing that was on my mind was how Jade would react when she found out.

How Shane would react was occupying my mind as well.

When the final bell rang, I walked to my locker to put away some books. The stares from the other students became more intense with every step I took. It was no doubt that the whole school knew about it.

"I knew he wouldn't have gone for a girl like her anyways," a girl muttered to her friend.

"She's a nerd, that's all she'll ever be," her friend said back to her.

The crap they were saying about Jade hurt my heart. I was the reason they were saying all these mean things about her.

The hallways were soon clearing out. Less and fewer students occupied the narrow halls. Soon it was just me and the lockers standing there.

I didn't know how long I stood there, but it was enough time for Jade to find me. She was walking slowly with her head down. She hadn't seen me yet, but from the looks of it, I'm guessing she heard about the deal.

When she picked up her head, I could see the sadness on her face. Her eyes met mine and then quickly ripped them away.

The silence was deafening.

When she got closer to me, she finally spoke.

"Tell me it isn't true," she whispered, her voice quivering.

I couldn't. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't tell her what she wanted to hear.

"Jade-"

"Just say it isn't true. I'm not believing it until I hear it come from your mouth," she explained.

I shook my head.

I couldn't lie to her. Not after what I've already done.

She took a sharp intake of breath. I didn't even want to look at her. I didn't want to see the pain she was feeling.

I could hear the sniffling coming from her. She hadn't said anything yet, maybe that was for the best.

"I was just a score," she mumbled softly.

"No, you weren't. You were more than that. You ARE more than that," I tried to clear up.

She shook her head. "I need to go."

"Wait, Jade! Can't I at least explain myself?"

It was too late. She was already walking away from me.

I might have just lost the girl I love.
