A while after Autumn left, I found myself wandering back toward my house. My temper had cooled a little, but I was still upset. I entered through the back door and found a note on the kitchen table.
Sophie,
I need a vacation. I'll be back Sunday night. There are leftovers for tomorrow and Sunday's lunch. See you in a couple days.
-Mom
I frowned. No "I'm sorry," or an "I love you". Just a plain, "See ya'!" I scowled. Since when did she need a vacation?
I ripped up the paper and threw it in the fireplace. I didn't need leftovers from her. I was perfectly capable of cooking for myself. I hated how she always treated me like a baby. I'm a mature sixteen-year-old lady, who can take care of herself!
I plopped down on the couch and turned on the TV, grinning. Tonight I would watch only movies I wasn't allowed to see. I crawled over to our shelves of movies and skimmed through some rated R films. Ooh, Carrie! I had wanted to see that one; it seem really spooky! But then again, anything by Steven King was probably scary.
I stuck the disk in the DVD Player and sat back down. I then had a crazy idea. I grinned at the thought. My mother would murder me for it. But I just couldn't resist.
I picked up the phone and called my best friend, Sydney. "Hey," I said as she answered.
"Hi Sophie!" she answered cheerfully.
"Party at my house. 7 tonight. Be there."
"Really? I'm surprised your mom let you."
"She didn't. She went on a vacation for the weekend."
"So you're doing this without permission?"
"Yeah, I know right? Exciting!"
"I've taught you so well!"
I laughed. "Call everyone and tell them to call everyone else. I'm inviting the whole class!"
"OMG Soph! This is SO exciting! I'll call everyone right away. Tootles!"
"Bye!"
I smiled to myself. I was finally defying my mother. I had never felt so...alive.
I called everyone in my contacts list and told them to call everyone they knew too. I quickly shut off Carrie and started setting out snacks on the tables. I glanced at the clock. 6:30. I ran upstairs and brought down my boom box and a box full of CD's.
Once everything was in place, I looked around at my handiwork and smiled. I couldn't believe I was doing this.
Honk! Honk! I heard the familiar beep of Sydney's car horn. She always beeped when she pulled into my driveway.
I hurried to the door and swung it open, waving out the screen door. "Syd!" I called.
"Heey!" greeted Sydney. "I can't believe you're actually going through with this! I'm so proud of you!" she gave me a hug and walked in.
She examined the room and exclaimed, "Excellent. You've done a great job setting up!"
"Thank you!" I heard car door slamming and I looked at the clock.
It was time.
