Chapter 13: Autumn Wood

Was this happening?  

We had finished our ice cream and we had a movie night.

We were watching Brave, which was a pretty new movie at the time.

I was laughing.

It felt good.

I was part of a family.

Unless this was their evil plot to finally kill me.

I hoped not.

What was happening?

We played a couple of board games and watched a couple more movies before Mother sent us up to bed.

"Wait Autumn. We need to speak with you."

She beckoned my sisters away, and motioned for me to follow her into the kitchen, with my father close behind.

Uh oh....

My father flashed me his killer smile, and my mother grinned sweetly.

"Autumn, would you like to explain to us where exactly you were this morning?"

No. That was what I wanted to say.

I opened and closed my mouth like a fish out of water.

My father raised an eyebrow and my mother casually walked over to the kitchen counter and grabbed a knife.

Not a butter knife.

A steak knife.

I knew it...the movie...the ice cream...

It was a scandal.

My throat twisted into a knot. What would she do to me?

"Answer you father."

I couldn't speak. I was petrified with fear. They had never done anything like this before.

"Answer!"

I wanted to scream. I wanted her to know the pain she had put me though all those years. I wanted...

Revenge...

I couldn't. I couldn't hurt this woman as much as she had hurt me. It was un-Christian-like. I had to stay strong. I couldn't let the Devil overpower me.

"This is your last warning."

What was I supposed to do? Run? Scream?

I prayed.

"Our father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come thy will be done."

My mother smiled sinisterly.

"On Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread."

She circled me like a lion stalking it's prey.

"And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation."

She was getting closer...

"But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever."

She was only a centimeter away from my face now. This was my last hurrah.

I felt blood running down my stomach.

I collapsed.

I looked down to find the knife lodged right underneath my heart.

I could feel my vision getting blurry.

It felt as if my whole insides were exploding.

And I knew I was going to die.

I managed to whisper one last word.

"Amen."
