Fear, pain, and sadness gripped my heart.

My mother, a woman in which I had feared and hated, had died for me.

She had died for me.

A single tear fell down my cheek.

A sniffling Dot fell against me and burrowed her face into my chest.

What was going to happen? Where would we go? We couldn't got back to live with my father. He'd surely kill me.

What would become of us?

"Sophie?"

A worried voice called out in the distance. "Sophie? Sophie!"

"Mom?" Sophie sprang up and looked around.

"That is my que. I'm afraid I have to leave now."

Rose disappeared in a ball of light.

"Sophie? Is that you? Where are you?"

The voice got louder as it drew closer.

"I'm her Mom. I'm here!"

A blonde woman came out of the brush and hugged Sophie. "Oh honey, what are you doing out here? I was worried sick."

"Mom, Autumn needed help."

"Wha-" Sophie's mother noticed we were there. "What happened? Is everyone alright?"

"Mom, we'll explain everything at the house."

"No. I want an explanation now."

"At the house, Mom," Sophie insisted.

Ms. Johnson sighed. "Fine."

Sophie gestured toward my siblings and me, and we followed. I picked up Dot and carried her, while gripping Maya's hand. We wandered through the brush into a huge backyard.

We arrived at the house.

I set Dot down and let her walk as we went up to the back patio and Ms. Johnson opened up the sliding glass door. It was a pretty nice house; the exact opposite of what I lived in.

"I'll bring you some snacks. You must be famished!" exclaimed Ms. Johnson as she hurried to the kitchen. We followed Sophie into a living room with two couches and a reclining chair. I sat between Luna and Maya, with Dot sitting on my knee.

Ms. Johnson returned with a platter of cookies. "Help yourselves, girls." She sat down in the recliner across from us.

"Now," said Ms. Johnson as we ate. "its to explain."

Sophie and I exchanged glances as she began. Once she was finished, I told my part of the story, with Luna adding on to how her and the girls brought me into the woods.

We finished, and Ms. Johnson leaned her chin against her hand, not sure what to say or believe.

Finally, she whispered, "I believe you."

My eyes widened and I couldn't breathe for a second. She believed us?

"I believe you. I don't think you would lie about such a thing."

I relaxed in relief.

Sophie spoke up. "What are we going to do?"

"About what?" asked her mother.

"Autumn. What about her and her family? Will she have to go back with her dad?"

Ms. Johnson considered this. "Just for tonight. We'll sort everything out in the morning."

Sophie nodded and looked at me. I didn't want to go back, but I didn't have any other choice. If we were gone, along with my mother, then returned later that day, he might believe we killed her. But what about my stomach? He knows I was stabbed. What would happen when he noticed it was gone?

We couldn't give the truth. He wouldn't believe us, then beat us for lying.

I didn't want to go back...

But I had to.

For my own sake.
