I'm alive.
That was my first thought.
My second was,
how?
Then the fairy came along.
"And...?"
"Someone will have to die in her place."
I caught my breath. I wasn't going to let that happen. No one was going to die.
"I'll do it."
"No, Luna, you can't."
I hadn't thought about the words that were coming out of my mouth; I had spoken from the heart. I wasn't going to let anyone I cared about die for me.
Everyone burst out into argument about who would die...death...I hated that word.
I couldn't stand it.
'It' being everything that had happened my entire life, especially this.
I looked in the direction of my house.
Wait.
What was that...?
Was that...a person?
My first thought: my mother.
Oh no....
"Guys," I said, on edge.
"What?!" they all replied as one.
"What's that?"
I pointed at the figure.
Silence.
It got closer...
and closer...
and closer...
and finally we could see her face clearly.
My instincts had been correct.
It was her.
The she-devil who had ruined my life.
Her...
"Hello, children."
She had an evil smiled painted on her face.
I looked into her eyes...was that...?
No...
Pain?
It couldn't be.
It disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.
"You," whispered Luna.
"Yes dearies. I'm come to take you home," she said in a sugar-sweet voice.
"We will never go home with you," snarled Maya.
My mother glared at her and reached into her back pocket.
Was that...?
She had come prepared.
She held the steak knife with a death grip, looking like she was about to explode.
It was then that she realized I was alive.
"How...?" she studied me with a stunned expression.
I smiled. "Magic."
Rose, the fairy, smiled.
"Alyssa. It has been years."
What?
Everyone else's faces were as confused as I felt.
"Rose...?" my mother whispered.
"Yes."
I gaped. They knew each other?!
How?!
"Alyssa, what have you done? What changed?"
What was going on?
My mother held a pained expression.
She let out one word, "Autumn..."
Me? What did I do?
"What happened?"
The knife clattered to the ground and my mother looked at Rose with a saddened face.
"I can't-"
"Yes. Tell us what happened. We can fix it."
"No you can't."
"How do you know?"
"Because she's dead."
What? Who? Who was dead? What was happening?
"Who?"
My mother pursed her lips.
"My mother."
Rose gasped. "Lily? But what happened to her?"
Mother glared at me.
"Autumn killed her."
