I hurried into the house as I shut off the car. I sure hoped Sydney would be some type of assistance. I kept the door unlocked for Sophie as I went into the kitchen and set my chicken fried steak on the table. I grabbed a fork and started eating.
Honk Honk!
There she is.
I went to the front door and opened it up for her. She was grinning from ear to ear, probably still happy over the party the other night.
"Heey!" she exclaimed with a bottle in her hand.
"Hey Syd! So what you got in mind?"
"For what?"
"Cleaning the house."
"Oh. That. I don't know. What are you thinking?"
"I don't know. I thought you came over 'cause you had a good idea."
She thought for a moment. "No..."
"Then why are you here?!"
"I said to meet me here 'cause I wanted to hang out, Soph. Geez. Loosen up."
"Loosen up?! My mother will be here at the end of the day, and look at this garbage disposal I'm calling home! Are you gonna help me, or what?"
She considered this. "No. I'm fine. I'll just watch."
Fire blazed within me. She was supposed to be my friend. She was supposed to help me. But no. She was just a snobby little rich brat.
"Get out."
"What?" She laughed. As if I would kick her out.
"Out. Now."
"Why?"
I could smell alcohol in her breath.
"'Cause I said so."
"Yeah? Well you're not my boss."
"You're in my house. I tell you what to do. Now OUT!"
"Come at me bro!" She spread her arms out, waiting for me to attack.
"C'mon Syd. We don't need to fight. Just get out."
"What happened to 'best friends forever', Soph? You're just going to kick me out?"
"Yes. 'Cause you know what Syd? You're not a very good friend. First, you've been trying to convince me to have a wild party for years, then when I actually do, you won't help me clean up even though you know my mom will KILL me for it."
She looked hurt.
"Soph, I was joking."
"Yeah? Well you've said that about a lot of stuff."
"Geez. Can't you take a joke?"
"Well guess what. I'm not in the mood for jokes at the moment. Incase you haven't noticed, my house is a complete disaster!"
"Calm down, sister. Take a chill pill."
"No. I will NOT calm down! I'm going to be MURDERED for listening to YOU!"
"Soph do you need some wine?" She held out the bottle for me to take and I swatted it out of her hands.
"No, and I'll never lay my eyes on it again! It ruined my life!" The bottle shattered. Great. Another thing for me to clean up.
"How could it have ruined your life? You've only gotten drunk once!"
I froze. How would I explain this? I had never told anyone before. What would she say?
"I-," I couldn't say it. I just couldn't.
"You what?" Sydney demanded.
I just couldn't say it.
"Fine. Keep your little secret. But I'm outta here! Oh, and btw, good luck trying to find a new best friend."
She slammed the door in my face.
I collapsed on my couch and cried. My whole life was falling apart.
Maybe the Fairy Tree would help...
No. I refused to go there. The last thing I needed was some imaginary creature bugging me.
What if Autumn's there?
Autumn. The thought was comforting. I barely knew her, but she was still a better friend than Sydney ever was. I finally decided I would go.
I pulled on my jacket and headed out the back door, wiping my eyes. I didn't want her to see me crying.
I sniffled as I trotted through the forest. Everything was going completely wrong. Nothing was supposed to be happening like this. In fact, the only good thing about this whole experience was Autumn.
Good luck finding a new best friend...as if! I never needed you anyway!
I couldn't control myself. I started crying as I reached the tree. I didn't see Autumn anywhere near, so I climbed higher than I ever had before. At this rate, I didn't care if I fell.
I sniffled, trying to get a hold of myself. I shouldn't have went off on Sydney like that, but she was kinda being a jerk. I was perfectly okay with her just being my ex-best friend.
I took a deep breath and looked at my watch, which I had, for some reason, but on today. It was 11:00; my mother would be home in a few hours. I was doomed.
Well if these are going to be my last few hours, I want to make them worthwhile.
