I stayed in the tree all the rest of the day and into the night.

I knew my mother was home. She had texted me multiple times.

I didn't care.

The Tree brought me comfort.

I wanted it to last.

But I knew it wouldn't.

I started to drift off into sleep.

So...tired....

I heard someone-or something-coming my way. I quickly sat up.

"Who's there?" My voice was shaking.

"Sophie?"

It was my mother.

"Sophie are you okay?"

"Mom?"

"Soph, my baby, where are you?"

"Over here, Mom!"

I could hear her getting closer.

"Mom!" I jumped down and ran through the darkness in the direction of her voice.

"Mom!"

"Soph?!"

"Mom!"

I leapt into her arms.

"Oh Sophie." She stroked my hair. "I was so worried about you. I found the house in ruins, and then I couldn't find you. I thought someone had broken in and hurt you." She was crying.

"Mom, really I'm okay." I felt tears sting my eyes. "No one broke in."

"Then...what happened to the house?"

I took a deep breath. I would have to tell her the truth.

"I...I threw a party."

Silence.

"A...party?"

"Yes. Please don't kill me."

"Honey, I wouldn't kill you."

"You...wouldn't?"

"No. Sweetie, I know what it's like to be in High School. I went to parties like that all the time."

"You...did?"

"Yes."

"Then why wouldn't you let me throw a party when you were home?"

"Because I wanted you to learn a lesson."

"You...wanted me to learn a lesson?"

"Yes. I knew if I went out of town and the house turned to ruins because of you, you would vow to never do it again."

"But...what about protecting me?"

"Honey, I was trying to protect you, but some things you just have to learn on your own."

More silence.

"You're not even mad?"

"I never said that."

I hung my head in shame.

She took my head in her hands and looked me in the eye. "I just want you to promise to never do that again."

"Believe me, Mom. I promised that the night I threw it."

She smiled. "You're still picking it up though."

"I know..."

She kissed my forehead and led me back to the house. My hair and clothes were stained and covered in leaves from spending the whole day in the woods.

When I reached the house and got cleaned up, I stared out my bedroom window, looking at the trees.

And just before I drifted off to sleep, I saw a single twinkling light coming from the direction of the Fairy Tree.
