Haru:
Another day, another dollar.
Working at a public pool was one of the great opportunities you had in life. It taught you better social skills, work habits, and most of all, it taught you how annoying the general public could be.
You walked around the pools perimeter, picking up things that had been left over from everyone who had been there today. Empty soda cans, half eaten food. You had to hold back your screams as you picked everything up and placed it into a trash bag.
The only good part of this job was the shirtless men and seeing people walking out aching with sunburn covering their bodies. Served them right for being so disrespectful.
Just when you thought the torture was over, and you were walking back to the shack you heard a large splash come from the pool. You tried to hold yourself back when you noticed a body half visible under the waters surface. "Yah!" You screamed, knowing he could hear you since he was close to the surface. But even as he broke through the water he swam around as if he didn't hear a thing. "You've got to be kidding.." You mumbled in disgust. "Yah! Don't you know the pool is closed! Get out!" His body tensed as he turned to let his feet touch the bottom of the shallow end of the pool. "What?" You could physically hear your blood boiling with anger. "Get. Out." You stated, hand shooting up to point at the exit. "The pool is closed."
Even though you were angry, you couldn't help staring at the boys body when he reached out and hoisted himself out of the pool. "Sorry. I thought you closed a little later. I guess that's why nobody's here." He took a few steps towards the exit before turning back. "Are you guys open tomorrow?" You nodded, obviously angry and he continued to exit. Stupid kid. Can't he read that we were closed? You finished the rest of your work for the day and closed up for the night.
The next day, not two minutes after you stepped out of your car was the boy from yesterday on your heels. "We don't open for another hour.." You mumbled, keys jingling to open the gate. "You said you were open today." This kid was truly unbelievable. It didn't matter if you opened later the second the gate was open he was walking through, discarding clothes, and jumping in.
You walked over to the edge, waiting for him to come back to the wall. "At least tell me your name." You asked, defeated by a boy you had just met. A wet hand emerged from the water to take a hold of yours. "Haru." He mumbled and then he was pushing himself away from the wall.
He was annoying, you couldn't stand that he didn't listen, but hell, at least he was cute. While walking away you heard another splash and then a call from him. "Yah! What time do you get off of work? I'll buy you some dinner. You know, for letting me in before hours." You didn't even bother turning around when you shouted back to him. "I get out at 5:00. I want pizza."Makoto:
Every morning. Without fail. A tall boy with brown hair would walk up the steps by your house, and carelessly pick up your cat. Acting as if it was his own. You counted the days, one, two, three. It went on for months.
You never wanted to say anything because he seemed harmless. He would give her a few good pats and then be on his way. Actually you kind of were beginning to like the way his eyes lit up when he saw the cat. And how gentle he was with her. You couldn't make him stop and you thought it would be rude to say anything.
One afternoon mid summer, you were out tending the flowers near the stairs when he came running up. Proceeding to stop, even though it looked like he was in a rush, and pet the cat. Your eyes peaked over the bushes to get a close up look at him. "Hey." You whispered from behind the bushes, trying to get a scare out of him. His eyes looked up towards the bushes but then immediately back down to the cat. It was your chance. You jumped up from the bushes, yelling a mild "boo!" in his direction.
Even though to this day he would deny it, you swore you saw him jump a little. You didn't know him then, but the laugh that came out of his mouth was something you eventually learned to love. "You must be the owner of the cat. Sorry. She's just really cute and I see her everyday. So I have to stop and greet her. It's become more of a habit."
You stepped down from where you were, joining him on the steps. "I've noticed. You've been around since she was a kitten. I don't mind. She seems to like you a lot, so I just let it go." You smiled, reaching out a hand to stroke the cats head even though he was holding her.
A huge smile on his face, he finally introduced himself. "I'm Makoto! It's nice to meet you. And thanks for never yelling at me for petting your cat." You couldn't help but laugh. "If you're interested.."
He said, leaving you no room to answer. "Maybe we can go grab a coffee sometime this week."
Two years later you were still happy you agreed to it.
