Chapter Four- Amending and Making Friendships

Kat sent a letter to Molly, Arthur, and Ginny that very night, apologizing very sincerely about being a Slytherin and hoping they would still accept her and allow her to live with them. She also sent a letter to all Weasleys over in Gryffindor, as well as Harry and Hermione, saying the same except for that they could still be friends. She got a reply from Hermione immediately saying of course, and not all Slytherins were bad and that Kat should try to make some Slytherin friends as well. She went to bed that night happy to have Hermione as her friend at least.

She woke in the middle of the night from a nightmare, one where the Weasleys and Harry hated her. She went to the bathroom to splash some water on her face and decided to go ahead and get ready for the day. She got dressed and packed her school bag with what she thought would be essential. She took a quick look at her charm bracelet to glare at the Slytherin house symbol on one of the charms. She'd gotten it last night and didn't know what to think of it yet. It hadn't done anything yet though so that was peculiar. Ignoring it again, she went ahead to the Commons to wait for a while. She still had a couple of hours before she was even allowed to go to breakfast in the Great Hall, so she took one of the books from the bookshelf and started to read. She read so many different ways to transfigure animals into things and things into animals that she figured she was ready for the first month of Transfiguration! Her reading was interrupted by the Malfoy boy walking into the Commons. She just glanced at him before going back to the book when he spoke.

"I'm Draco by the way, Draco Malfoy." He was now standing in front of her, hand out in front of him.

"Kat Prewett." She took his hand after a while earning a smirk from the boy. "What are you doing up so early?"

"I could ask you the same. I woke myself up from being worried I was late for breakfast and wouldn't get my schedule. That would make me late for my first class of my entire Hogwarts career!" Draco animatedly sat down on the opposite side of the couch. Kat moved her feet from having her knees in front of her face to sitting criss-cross. "What about you?"

"Um, just woke up too early I guess." She easily lied.

"You really are Slytherin, aren't you? You forgot you're talking to a fellow Slytherin though, I know you're lying." He proudly said, happily knowing he was right.

"Well it's not a reason you would like then, okay?" She quickly said, trying to just get off the topic.

"You should be careful how you talk to me-" he started warningly.

"Sorry." Kat interrupted. "But you really wouldn't like my reason. What time is it?" She closed her book as he cast a spell to see what time it was.

"Nearly time to be able to go to breakfast, want to go ahead and start walking down there?" He asked almost shyly.

"Sure, do you think I can take this book with me?" She asked him, showing which book it was.

"Sure, no one will probably care." He shrugged and grabbed his school bag, and so did Kat. She put the book in her bag and they left the Slytherin Commons.

"Ron, maybe not all Slytherins are bad? I mean, you've lived with her forever! Does she really seem like a bad person? Hermione apparently already told her they could stay friends. I'm thinking I will too." Harry told Ron.

"I know she's not a bad person, I know. It's just, maybe she was and she hid it?" As soon as he saw Harry's face, he knew he'd said something stupid. "Just give me some time Harry, alright? She could already be corrupted by the other Slytherins for all we know!" Ron animatedly said. Harry rolled his eyes and walked out of the Gryffindor Commons with Ron. They walked down to the Great Hall, somewhat earlier than either had liked thanks to Percy. They were surprised to find a few people already in there; Hermione was sat with a book open already in front of her while Kat and a Ravenclaw girl stood next to her with a book in their hands as well. Malfoy was sat at the Slytherin table glaring at the Gryffindor table while Kat talked to Hermione and the other girl, whom he knew as Sky. A few older Ravenclaws sat at their table with parchment on the table and talking to each other, one pointing at a book. A Hufflepuff couple were walking down the Hufflepuff table to sit near the end, holding hands.

As Harry and Ron drew nearer to Hermione, Skylar, and Kat, they all looked up to look at them. Kat's face paled and she looked down suddenly. Harry said hey to each of the girls and Kat smiled a bit, saying hello back. She said hey to Ron, who just grunted in reply. Kat looked at who else was walking in and Percy waved at her, not caring what house she was in. She smiled and waved back, happy to know he had gotten over their house differences. She saw Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy about to walk in so she said goodbye to her Gryffindor friends and Ravenclaw friend quickly then ran back to the Slytherin table.
She didn't want to be deemed a house traitor on her first day.
