Chapter Six- Halfway Through the Year
Kat's leg was healing wonderfully, the only part that remained was the soreness of her leg. Draco never caught onto her pain either, which was wonderful. She'd gotten another pendant the night before, this one with the troll's club as the symbol on it.
They were eating at breakfast when the calls of owls could be heard. Kat's own owl had come back with two letters!Kat had gotten a letter back from Molly saying that she and Arthur were fine with it and Ginny hadn't really express an opinion yet. Molly also mentioned how she'd almost sent a howler saying how dare Kat think she weren't allowed to stay at the house anymore. Kat laughed at this and sent a letter back saying she was grateful to have her as an aunt and Arthur as her uncle. She said to tell Ginny that she wasn't a different person, she was the same, just different than her cousins, like always. Kat also had to let Molly know how the Harry Potter and Ron were best of friends and Harry was very nice to her.
She opened her other letter, this one was from the twins.
They said that they could not care less which house she was in as long as they could do pranks together sometimes and she wouldn't be mean to them. She is still who she was and that was final. They would try to get Ron to come around. In the meantime, focus on studying and being a good Slytherin, if that were possible.
She smiled gratefully at the twins across the room from her, who were watching for her reaction.
Her owl nudged her arm, until she fed it a few owl treats. It then left and she left as well, to go to Care of Magical Creatures. This was the only class she had with her Ravenclaw friend, Skylar, so she looked forward to it very much.––——————————––
Molly told the children to stay at Hogwarts this Christmas break because their plans were canceled. Draco was going home, and so were most of the Slytherins. Draco actually invited Kat to go with him, as did Pansy, but Kat kindly declined because of how their parents might've acted toward her. Kat started to walk toward the Gryffindor table to talk to Hermione but her walk faltered when she saw Ron and Harry there instead. Harry waved her over and Ron merely nodded. 'Better than the usual, I guess.' Kat thought.
"Hey Kat, how're you?" Harry greeted kindly.
"I'm well, how are you?" Kat returned the niceties.
"Alright, we've been planning to stop Snape from getting the Sorcerer's Stone." Harry grinned. That confused Kat for a second.
"Wait, what? Sorcerer's Stone? Snape would not try to get it, what would he use it for?" Kat quickly drilled a hole in their reasoning.
"You sound like Hermione." Ron rolled his eyes.
"Oh, I didn't know you were talking to me now."
"Okay guys, please figure something out between you two!" Harry interrupted.
"She's the Slytherin, Harry! With them for not even a year and everything has changed with her!" The name dripped with poison from Ron's lips.
"I'm not the one with a problem. He's the one with the prejudice against Slytherins. Not all Slytherins are bad and not all bad people are Slytherins." She leaves for the Slytherin Commons before Ron can even say something back. Kat flops onto the couch and pulls one of the books out of her bag and opens to the page she's on. A piece of parchment falls out and lands on her lap.
'If you want to write me, here's my address.
~Draco Malfoy'That's exactly what she wants to do right now. But, she decides against it because what would she even write about? How unfair it is that she's Slytherin? That wouldn't work. She decided instead to continue to read about different Potions and their uses to get ready for semester exams at the end of next week.
Professor Snape had given this book to her because she said she'd be bored all Christmas break and wanted to read a Potions book. He'd almost happily given it to her, wanting a promising Potions student that wasn't his godson or the know-it-all Granger. She quickly wrote notes on some of the different potions like Wolfsbane, Sleekeasy's Hair Potion, Skele-Gro, Pepperup Potion, Hiccoughing Potion, Draught of Peace, Confusing Concoction, and many others. She was halfway through the book when her stomach started to growl. Kat figured it was nearly time for lunch anyways so she left for the Great Hall.
"Hello Miss Prewett." A voice said behind her as she walked in. Kat turned around to see Professor Dumbledore himself walking in as well.
"Oh, hello Professor." She nodded her head in greeting, unsure of what else to do.
"It's a beautiful snowy day out, why aren't you outside practicing quidditch with Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley?"
"I didn't know they were outside, and it's pretty chilly outside. I'd rather stay in and read." She said politely, putting more weight on her left leg as soon as her right leg started to hurt.
"What happened to your leg?" Dumbledore asked, although Kat would have bet 10 galleons that he already knew.
"It's just sore, I probably slept on it weird this morning." She answered slightly truthfully.
"Whatever you say Miss Prewett, and I think you'll find Ron to be more forgiving now. His brothers knocked some sense into him earlier, quite a scene to watch." Dumbledore chuckled happily. "They're out by the greenhouses."
"Thank you," Kat replied then left the Great Hall without eating.
