"Why did you steal from me Sierra?"
She flinched at the harshness of his voice.
"My brother needed an operation" she stated simply.
The silence after she finally admitted the truth seemed to stretch forever. He wasn't expecting that explanation.
She carried on "My mother called from the hospital telling me my stepfather was away on business and she had no access to that kind of cash without him so she asked me, she promised she'd pay it back when he came back the following day, I honestly thought the money would be back before you came back" she whispered her voice sounding husky with emotion "Please don't go after my mother for payment" she said eyes full of terror.
Gerard was too stunned to even respond so she carried on "I'm assuming things are bad with my stepfather because I never got the money back and she won't answer my calls anymore".
The regret on her face was so strong he worried she might cry.
"But why didn't you just tell me this in the first place?" He whispered
"I did try to call you, but you had an away game and when you never picked up I assumed you were at training, plus I thought you wouldn't mind since you left me your card". The realisation dawned on Gerard she had tried to call him that day but because of the hectic training schedule and the match against Atletico Madrid he wasn't able to call her back.
"None of it matters because you failed to ask me why before you called the cops" her voice cracked.
That's when Gerard really saw the damage he had inflicted on the woman he loved by failing to ask why she did what she did. He had ruined their relationship and caused her a tremendous amount of stress over such a minor incident and what made it worse was the fact that she didn't take the money for her own personal gain but to try and help her brother.
"I think I'll go lie down for a little while" she rose refusing to meet his gaze and even though he stood close to her she was careful not to so much as brush past him. He wanted to stop her and apologize for everything but he knew it was best to let her have a little space because he knew she wanted to be as far away from him as possible.
