Ellie and Poppy were 11 years old, and Ellie had become an exceptional piano and guitar player, while Poppy learned to be an incredible dancer. She too played the piano, though not quite as much as her friend. It was more of a pass-time thing. The date was July 21st and the two girls were in the living room, Poppy dancing to the music Ellie was playing on the piano.
"You two are getting really good!" Sam smiled lovingly at the girls and they laughed.
"Thanks, Sam," Ellie replied, laughing slightly as Poppy clumsily fell onto her backside.
"Shut up!" She exclaimed in mock anger, hauling herself up, "This is a one-off-thing, you're the clumsiest person on the planet, El!" They all laughed and then a loud tap was heard from the door, indicating the post had arrived. "I'll get it!" Poppy leapt up and darted for the door. "El! There's one for each of us!" She cried excitedly, and Ellie went to see. "Two letters." Poppy held out the one addressed to Ellie and she took it eagerly. The letter was sealed with red wax, and their exact room was addressed on the parchment envelope in almost calligraphic handwriting.
"Eleanor Persephone, The Attic, 8 Privet Drive, Surrey, England," she read aloud. "Let's open them!" The girls ravenously tore the envelopes open, sprinting up the stairs to their room to read their letters in private.
"Dear Miss Poppy Roberts," Poppy began, "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry!" Both of their mouths dropped to the floor. Being so young and naive, they didn't even bother to consider it as a joke. "Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31."
"Witchcraft and wizardry?! What, so we'll learn magic tricks?!" Ellie exclaimed, her voice laced with shock and excitement.
"I don't know, it seems like more than that to me," Poppy looked harder at the letter, "read the equipment list."
"Students must be equipped with a cauldron, the appropriate uniform, textbooks, and a wand. They can choose between a cat, a toad and an owl for a pet." Ellie looked at Poppy in disbelief.
"Let's go and tell Sam!" Poppy called out, pulling her best friend down the stairs. "Sam! This letter says we've been accepted into Hogwarts!"
"Hogwarts? What's a Hogwart?" He asked, confused.
"It's a school," Ellie explained what was said in the letter, "for witches and wizards! We're gonna do magic!" Sam gave them a quizzical look, and gestured to see the letter. He skimmed it quickly, before tearing it in half, earning a shocked squeak from the girls.
"Girls, this isn't real. There's no such thing as magic." He said simply, and threw the parchment into the trash. Ellie and Poppy exchanged a sad glance, and sulked up the stairs to their shared room in the attic.
"It has to be real, I mean whoever sent it knew what room we were in!" Ellie exclaimed.
"Yeah! Well, I suppose there isn't much we can do now," Poppy sighed defeatedly, "perhaps we'll get another letter?" She said, hopefully, yet doubtfully. Poppy's prayer was answered. When the girls had met up after Poppy's dance lesson and Ellie's guitar lesson, they came home to find Sam throwing huge mounds of the familiar letters into the fireplace.
"I'm going to have to go to the police about these, they won't stop coming!" Sam complained and shook his head. The girls exchange a mischievous glance and head up to their room.
"Pops, you were right!" Ellie whisper-shouted happily."As always," Poppy said, flicking her hair behind her ear dramatically, causing Ellie to roll her eyes.
"Now we can try and get one of those letters Sam was burning and then we can be magic!" They squealed excitedly, quickly piping down after a complaint from Sam. "We have to get one of those letters without Sam knowing!" Ellie said, her voice considerably more quiet, "so, what we'll do-" She was cut off by a tap at their window. Poppy jumped slightly as a huge beautiful owl perched on the windowsill. Their confusion soon died down as they noticed two sealed letters clutched in the bird's beak. Ellie took the letters from it, gently stroking its soft feathers. They finally had their letters.
-
It had been two days since Ellie and Poppy had received their Hogwarts letters. They were sat under the slide at the park with their close friend Harry. Dudley was with his repulsive friends, being sure to avoid Ellie and Poppy, who he had grown to be rather afraid of over the years. "Anything new then, Harry?" Ellie turned to Harry.
"Kind of. It's been very eventful recently." He replied.
"Eventful how..?" Poppy asked, wondering if it had been as eventful as their past few days.
"I got a letter," he stated simply, "which is just weird. I never get mail from anybody but you two, and it didn't look like your writing.""Do you have it with you?" Ellie asked quickly, thinking that maybe it was the same.
"No," Harry shook his head regretfully, "my Uncle Vernon burned it.""What did it look like?" Poppy questioned, thinking the same as her friend.
"Erm... it had a red wax seal on it..." Harry began, the two girls exchanging a nervous glance. "It wasn't like normal paper, it looked old and strange. And it was addressed to my exact room. So weird."
"Did it look like this?" Poppy asked, pulling out her own letter. The girls kept their letters with them at all times so Sam didn't find out. Harry eyed the letter, and nodded, shocked. "Harry..." Poppy trailed off, so Ellie finishes for her.
"We got those letters as well," Harry gave the girls an incredulous look, "it's most likely the same thing. You're a wizard, Harry." She lowered her voice so as not to draw attention to them.
"I-I'm a what?" Harry's eyes widened at the sudden news.
"You're a wizard. We got that letter too, and it says that you've been accepted into a school called Hogwarts. We don't know much about it either, but we know it's true." Poppy explained, taking on a sudden seriousness.
"This makes no sense, but anything to get away from here." Harry said with a tilt of his head, still in a state of shock.
"Listen, the letter has all of the details on it. I know Vernon got rid of it but they will find a way to get the letter to you," Ellie said, comforting her friend. "Sam took our letters too, but they delivered loads more, and then they got an owl to deliver one to our bedroom window." Harry nodded, suddenly extremely excited. "I'll finally get away from stupid fat Dudders!" He exclaimed, eager to leave his mundane life behind.
"Then it's settled," Poppy grinned, "We're going to Hogwarts. Together!"
