"Pops, do you remember this one?" Ellie asks, sat at the piano, while Poppy is lounging lazily over one of the sofas. They're alone in the common room.
"Go on." She says. Ellie begins playing a movie soundtrack that her and Poppy used to listen to religiously. This causes Poppy's head to snap up, and a knowing grin break out onto her face. She hums along with the nostalgic melody.
"We used to be obsessed with this song." Poppy laughs.
"And the movie, don't forget." Ellie says as she continues playing.
"Hey!" A clearly angered voice declares, causing Ellie to stop her playing. The girls turn around to see Alicia Spinnet and Katie Bell - and they do not look pleased.
"...Can we help you..?" Ellie asks, calmly and politely.
"We want to know what gives you first years the right to replace us on the Quidditch team!" Katie yells.
"We're only here, love. No need to shout." Poppy says, in the same sickly-sweet manner Ellie had taken on.
"Ugh, stop playing nice. We know what you're really like." Alicia says venomously.
"...And that would be...?" Ellie asks politely again, playing dumb.
"Lying snakes!" Katie bellows, causing the girls to jump slightly.
"Got quite a mouth on you, haven't you, Katie?" Poppy chuckles, neither of the girls getting angry.
"Shut up. We know you somehow got Wood to put you as Chasers on the team. We don't know how, but it definitely wasn't talent that got you in." Alicia says, glaring at them.
"Excuse me? But weren't we the ones that won the first game of the season against Slytherin?" Ellie says, emphasising every word.
"Yes, and aren't Fred and George, the ones you're clearly in bloody love with, the ones that said - and I quote, 'You're the best Chasers we've had in... well, ever!'" Poppy says, both of the girls with smug grins on their faces.
"What makes you think we're in love with Fred and George?" Alicia asks, a little more warily this time, but there was still venom dripping from each word.
"Don't think everybody doesn't know about your little crushes on them. You're always staring at them - I'm pretty sure Fred and George are the only people in the school who don't know!" Poppy laughs, only angering the two girls further.
"Well... don't think that you two have a chance with them! You're first years!" Katie chimes in, clearly struggling to think of a comeback.
"The subject of this argument changed a little quick, don't you think?" Ellie leans over and whispers to Poppy, who laughs.
"Yeah, they're never gonna want you! You're both ugly, too! Like you, with your stupid odd eyes. It looks ridiculous, everyone says it!" Alicia says, glaring at Ellie. This causes Ellie to falter slightly. Her eyes had always been something she was self-conscious about. She was always certain that people avoided her because of them. Poppy knew this was something Ellie was sensitive about, and didn't hesitate to stand up for her.
"Don't you dare talk about that!" Poppy was now yelling louder than Katie and Alicia.
"Hey! What's going on!?" A new voice calls from the doorway. Then, two identical gingers run towards them.
"Stop!" George says, now restraining a writhing and seething Poppy from biting the girls' heads off. When Poppy calms down, he lets go.
"Thanks, boys." Katie says, with a shit-eating grin.
"Pfft, please. We didn't do it for you." Fred says, anger flaring in his eyes.
"But they-"
"No! We heard everything. Don't try to lie to us, Alicia." George says. "Poppy, you are not ugly, you're beautiful." He says sweetly, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I know, Georgie. But Ellie's the one you should be helping out." She says coolly, though she can still feel her cheeks heating up. George gives her a questioning look. "They started talking about her eyes." Poppy explains, now all three of them glaring at Katie and Alicia. Only Ellie's closest friends knew about this insecurity - these being Poppy and the twins.
"Ellie," Fred says, grabbing her shoulders. Ellie refuses to look at him. "Ellie, look at me," he gently pushes her chin up so she looks into his eyes, hers clearly visible, and glassy with tears. "Your eyes don't look ridiculous. They're beautiful. Don't listen to them, they literally only called you out on them because they're jealous of you being on the Quidditch team. None of us think that your eyes are ugly." Fred says, smiling softly at her.
"Yeah, they're bloody cool, El." George says, ruffling her hair. This causes her to grin.
"Thanks guys." She says, wiping her tears away and standing up.
"Shall we, El? Might make you feel better." Poppy suggests, a grin on her face. Ellie nods with a smirk. The two walk up to the girls, sweet grins on their faces.
"Love ya!" They say, blowing two kisses to Alicia and Katie, before spinning on their heels and exiting the common room. They always loved the movie Mean Girls.
