I rushed back to my house only to find my father waiting on the porch for me. He looked mad.
"Melody Walters! Where have you been? There is no reason for a sixteen year old girl like you to be running around the city at this time!" I rolled my eyes and pushed past him towards the door.
"I was with Andrew dad." I replied. He sighed a breath of relief. Andrew was the only guy my dad trusted me with, just because we had know each other since kindergarten and, of my dad's knowledge, we weren't dating. It's surprising what parents don't know sometimes.
Once I got past my dad I headed up to my room, my mother probably had already woken up and went to work. I had a shower and changed into slightly warmer clothes, New York weather was unpredictable during the summer, and ran down stairs. I shoved a couple waffles into the toaster just as Andrew walked in.
"Hello, Mr. Walter." Andrew greeted warmly.
"Hello Andrew, now tell me, did you have a good night sleep?" my dad asked Andrew inquisitively. I signaled Andrew to cut it out and shut up but apparently he didn't catch my drift.
"I slept very well, thank you very much." Andrew crossed his arms behind his back like a small school boy as I slapped my head and slid down the wall in defeat.
"You didn't happen to wake up at about five into the morning?' my dad pressed. Now Andrew knew something was up.
"Um, I was just coming over to get Melody," he dashed over and grabbed my hand, "Bye!" he called out as he pulled me out of my house and onto the open streets of New York. A black car whizzed by us as we fan down the block, going as far away from my house as we could get.
I laughed as we finally slowed to a stop in front of a glass skyscraper. "Didn't you see me signaling for you to shut up?" I giggled.
He grabbed my hand and swung it up and down playfully, "Is it so bad that I can't stop staring at your beautiful face?" I smiled at his compliment and pulled him thought the city. We spent the day walking around and talking. I found a new summery dress that had black and white polka dots and spaghetti straps. It ended just above my knees. It was something my dad would never let me wear, even if my life depended on it. I guess I would just have to keep this a secret. At least I didn't have to worry about my mom. She didn't care what I wore. She didn't care about me at all. She was way too wrapped up in her work, whatever it was. Whenever she did spend time with me she avoided talking about it. So while all the other kids brought their parent to career day I sat in the back of the class, alone.
I decided to wrap my dress in a scarf, that I had also purchased, and hide it from my dad. After about two hours of hopping I decided that I had tortured Andrew enough and let him choose something to do. He smiled and led me back to Central Park. Under the same tree where we had kissed before.
"Shall we continue?" he suggested. I smiled and graciously kissed him again. This time he didn't pull away half way through the kiss. He leaned deeper and deeper.
I pulled away, though, when I heard a loud cracking noise from my right. "What was that?" I asked squeezing Andrew's hand.
"Nothing." He whispered, trying to kiss me again.
"No, I heard something." I stated with conviction and turned toward the sound. I took a small step toward the dead trees as about six children burst out from behind them. They were all armed with dozens of mushy snow balls mad from the small amounts of precipitation in the morning. "I told you I heard something!" I laughed and covered my face as the kids began pelting snow balls at me. I yelped and hid behind Andrew how was just as bad as them. Finding no protection nearby I ran out though the forest and toward a small patch of meadow. When I stepped on what I thought was grass, I found I to be a sheet of ice.
I yelped as my traction-less boots slid over it. I could hear Andrew's laugh mixed in with the children's as I skidded to a stop. "I'm going to kill you!" I growled.
"Oh no!" Andrew exclaimed sarcastically. I tried to push off from the ice and slide towards the group of kids, but my plan reversed. Instead of gliding forward I slipped back and ell. I hear a spine chilling crack as my head hit the ground.
"Melody, are you okay?" Andrew said, rushing over to me and offering his hand.
I smiled and let him pull me up. "I am now." I replied, pushing him down and taking off onward the other side of the park. After a while I found the ground much more stable and I was able to move in full blast. I could hear Andrew behind me though, and he was speeding up. Soon he was close enough to grab my long white trench coat, which is exactly what he did. The force of his grip of the fabric spun me around and into his arms. I was out of breath. I tried to escape from his grasp many times but my attempts all failed as he pressed his lips to mine.
"Ugh." The bunch of children who had been trailing me sighed in unison. Andrew and I laughed as they began pelting both of us with the compacted balls of death.
"Looks like you plan back fired!" I yelled as Andrew pulled me out of the park and back into the city. For the rest of the day we walked into small stores and tried on outrageous things that we couldn't afford to buy until the store owners kicked us out. Then we roamed the city, stopping my side streets to take pictures of listen to soulful music. But the day turned to night and soon we began to head home.
"What are you going to tell you dad about the dress?" Andrew asked.
"Nothing." I smiled slyly. I heard a leaf crunch behind us and turned around, half expecting a mob of children, but only finding a dark figure. I paid no mind to him at that time but when he was still following us ten minutes later I started getting scared.
"Um, there's a guy following us." I murmured into Andrew's ear.
"Cool." He whispered back. Then he turned and headed straight towards the shadowy figure.
"Andrew!" I whined, pulling on his arm. "Let's just go."
"Oh calm down, it's going to be fine." He whispered still heading toward the man. "Excuse me sir, but why are you following us?" Andrew asked in an accent that seemed to be somewhere between French and British. I stifled a laugh behind him as the dark figure frowned.
"Excuse me?" he asked. I could have sworn that I had heard that voice before, I just don't know where.
"Listen buddy, could you just buzz off?" Andrew said again, this time switching to a New York accent.
"No, you listen." The stranger said, switching his voice as well, I gasped as the stranger removed his dark hood, it was my father.
"Oh my gosh! Dad! What are you doing?!" I exclaimed.
Andrew's face was a ghostly shade of white as he stuttered, "Mr. Walter, sir. I am so sorry."
"Ah, shut up." My dad said taking me by the wrist.
I laughed, turned around, and waved to Andrew, "See you tomorrow!"
He waved back as my dad muttered, "You wish." I rolled my eyes and followed my dad home.
