I sort of missed Stevie. I didn't see him or the rest of the band as nearly as often as I used to. They were always busy recording in the studio so I had to entertain myself.
I had gone back to my old haunts and fell back into my scamming days. I needed money, not as much as before, but I still needed money for food. I had gained a couple of much needed pounds by hanging out and mooching off the guys all the time.
I had been sitting on a park bench for an hour staring into space and thinking about what I should do. The sun had gone down a long time ago and normally at this time I'd be halfway into conning a guy to give me $50 or something.
Instead I was thinking, an unusual activity for me. I didn't know what to do. I thought about checking to see if Stevie was maybe home, but I was worried he might've forgotten about me. I didn't need any money right now (well I did but I didn't feel like acquiring it right now). I was feeling pretty tired and gross. I realized I hadn't slept in about 3 days so I decided to catch up on that. I also hadn't been to my 'home' in a week. It was probably time to move out of that garage.
I walked leisurely to my dwelling. Once I got there I looked dejectedly at the room I'd been staying in. It was disgusting. Full of bugs, dirt, mold, and mystery substances. There was my sweat-stained mattress that I genuinely have no clue where I got that from. The single end table with my old backpack hiding under it. The shower curtain hiding the toilet I never used from view.
All my possessions were in my backpack. I didn't really own the end table and I honestly wasn't about to drag that dirty mattress around.
So I swung my backpack over my shoulder and went to tell Gustavo I was done here. I knocked on the door and a woman dressed in her underwear answered.
"Hi, is Gustavo here?" I asked politely.
"Who are you?" She asked suspiciously.
"The girl who's been living the garage," I replied acting innocently.
The more polite and innocent i was the easier it was for me to manipulate someone.
The woman left and Gustavo came to the door.
"What do you want?" He asked.
"Just letting you know I'm moving out so you can sucker some other poor girl into moving in there."
"Fine. Give me hundred dollars and go," he demanded.
"Motherfucker, no way," I was not about to pay this creepy asshole.
"Fine you don't want to pay money. You still have to pay."
"I'm not sleeping with you, creep!" I yelled.
"You owe me!" He insisted.
"Um," technically he was right since I was really bad at paying rent I probably did owe him and probably more than $100. "How about no thanks?" I said and sprinted off his doorstep.
I heard his footsteps following me, but he wasn't wearing shoes and I was really good at running away. If I ever cared about high school, I could've been the star of the track team.
I knew the trick to losing someone was to take lots of turns and since I knew Gus wasn't wearing shoes I made sure to turn down the alleys with gravel and other rocky pathways.
It didn't take me long to lose him, but I didn't really have a destination in mind at all. I wasn't near any of my favorite bars (or just the bars I knew didn't card) or anywhere all that familiar. I'd probably been down this way before, but I couldn't remember when or why. It didn't help that it was dark outside either.
I really needed to start thinking about things. I was tired and lost with no where to go. It was an experience I had one too many times.
With a sigh, I plopped down on the nearest bench and fell asleep. I wasn't proud of these moments. I didn't want to sleep on a bench, but then again I didn't really care.
I woke up as the sun rose. Its light was blinding me. It was a good thing I woke up for obvious reasons. I checked my bag to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
"Fuck!" I screamed out loud. "Shit, shit," I started repeating to myself. "Where did it go? Oh my fucking god," I whispered to myself.
I put my head in my hands and nearly cried. But I didn't. I sucked it up and started walking.
Since I was super distracted I didn't know where the fuck I was going and ran directly into someone.
"Sorry," I muttered.
"Hey, it's you!" the person drunkly shouted.
I looked up quickly.
"Oh hey you're Duff," I said to the tall blond haired dude.
"Yeah you're Stevie's little crazy friend," he laughed.
"Heidi is my name," I said.
"Oh come with me Stevie going be so excited. You're never around anymore. I think he misses you," duff said and raised his eyebrows at me.
I laughed and followed him, quiet relieved to not be alone anymore.
