Chapter eight

I burst into the house through the screen door and yell again

“Grandpa!”

Suddenly Mom, Grandma, Dad and Grandpa come rushing over.

“Sweetie, What is it?”

But I am unable to speak for a second the adrenalin coursing through me has mixed up my mind.

“Cami! Is something wrong?” I hear Meagan yell as she rushes down the stairs to join us.

“One of the boarding horses has colic!” I choke out.

Immediately Grandpa moves past me to go out the door “Which one?” He asks.

“The bay thoroughbred gelding.” I manage to call out before he disappears in the night.”

“Let’s Go!” Meagan says as she grabs her cell phone.

When we enter the barn Grandpa had already started walking the gelding up and down the aisle.

“Check his papers and call the owners please.’ Grandpa says to us.

I run over to his stall and hastily clip his papers off his front door. The papers state his name, important medical information about him, and contact information form the owner.

“Jeremiah” So that is this horse’s name. Now the connection register’s in my brain. I’ve seen this horse in the arena, he’s a fairly new boarder but his owner, a older woman, treat’s him well and always comes out on the weekends to jump and care for him.

“Here,” I say as I hand the papers to Meagan who immediately starts to press the number’s into her phone.

“Hi, Mrs. Gregory. This is Meagan from Eraser Barn. I’m calling on behalf of Jeremiah. My sister noticed him acting irregular and now we are pretty sure he has come down with colic. I’m about to call the vet. Is that OK with you?” Meagan says to Jeremiah’s owner

“Ok then, see you soon.” Megan says before ending the call. She then wastes no time dialing the vet’s number.

“Hey Doctor, we have a horse down here with colic, could you make it over here as soon as possible?” Meagan asks Steve, Eraser’s official veterinarian.

“Alright thank you, see you soon!” Meagan says before ending that call.

“Let’s check and see how he’s doing,” Marisa said while starting to walk down to where Grandpa was leading Jeremiah.

“How is he?” I ask

“He’ll be fine when Steve gets here. Is he on his way?” Grandpa asked

“Yes, I just got off the phone with him so will Mrs. Gregory.”

“Well I think Jeremiah will be just fine. He seems to have only a mild case,” Grandpa said.

I passed the time until Mrs. Gregory or Steve arrived by watching Jeremiah walk up and down the aisle. His bay coat was slick with sweat and the horse was breathing heavily. He was nervous and continued to whinny at every horse who poked their nose out of their stall window.

We all seemed to sigh with relief when we heard a car pull in to the drive way and heard a door slam.

“I’ll greet who ever it is.” Meagan offered.
