Ten Years Later

As I woke up, the sun was shining vibrantly into the house.  All the light bounced off of the one-room house walls.  I rose from the bed, and reached for my t-shirt and ripped up blue jeans. Maybe Vahn would get me some new pairs when he got back from his hunting trip. Now that he was fourteen, he could finally go with the hunters into the outside world.

I stared into the mirror at my electric blue hair. My blue eyes were tearing up. I would miss Vahn. There's always that terrible chance of the hunters not returning home. I brushed the thought from my mind and turned as gingerly as possible to check on Vahn.

He was still asleep with his messed up blue hair. I waited for him to wake up but he continued his silent slumber. I brushed the hair out of his face as Nene walked in.

"Is that sleepy-head still sleeping?" she asked loudly as she strode over to raise an eyebrow at our brother.

"Yes, he is," I replied. "Maybe we shouldn't wake him. He looks so peaceful."

BANG!

Vahn bolted straight up in his bed with his soft brown eyes dilated and searching for the cause of the bang. He looked over to father with a look of distress on his face.

"Why are you all crowding around the bed?" he asked groggily as he rubbed his eyes.

"Vahn, today you have to visit Mei so she can get the final measurements for the hunting clothes she's making you," Nene responded.

At these words, Vahn blushed and bit his lip trying to cover up a grin attempting to bloom on his face. He responded, "Yeah, right. I almost forgot about that. I forgot after my fourteenth birthday that I would be a hunter. I'm so excited!"

I smiled at Vahn and hugged him. I was wishing I could go with Vahn as well on the hunting trip. I was fourteen as well. My twin brother always got to do the things that I wasn't qualified to do...just because I was a girl. I sighed and made my way to the door.

The wind was very calm. The smell of sea salt was flowing gracefully through the city.  It was so hard to believe that so many people outside this city were in pain.  Most were suffering and most would never see the light of day again.  I wanted to know more.  I wanted to find out why things were the way they were.  I would do anything.

I strode down to the beach to watch the waves coming in from places I knew I would never visit. If only something would happen...I wanted to see the world. I wanted to know what lied outside the stone wall surrounding our city.

I sighed once more and went to speak with Tetsu.

"You look kind of blue," was his response as I walked over to him with my hands in my pockets. He started over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. "What's wrong Kate?"

I look into his brown eyes and respond, "Tetsu, I want to see the world. I want to learn about the Mist and how it came about. I wish it would go away. If it were gone, maybe Mei would have her mother back. What if-" I paused. I didn't know what else to say. So much was filling my mind.

Tetsu understood and said, "Kate, I know how you feel. I really don't think there's any hope left for Legaia. This Mist has engulfed us for so long. I don't think I want to know what people would be like if it were to lift. I don't know what to hope or think..." He looked to the ground.

"Tetsu," I start slowly, "do you ever miss the Biron Monastery? If you could would you go back?"

Tetsu jerked his head up to look at me. I thought he was going to yell but he said calmly, "I do miss the Monastery. I had so many friends there and everyone was so kind and considerate. I just hope they are all doing well and they are fighting against the Mist."
