Chapter One

Chapter 1

I let my fingers drum against my steering wheel to the beat of the song “Animal” by Miike Snow as I drove by myself down the lonely country road. I looked to the backseat and trunk to check on my boxes of stuff. I ran my fingers through my soft blonde hair. It caught curls and twisted them in my fingers as I got my hands back on the steering wheel. Moving on my own was a lot more difficult then I thought it would be, I kept an eye out for the mailbox with 1875. The houses out here in the country were spread out, with trees keeping them secluded in their own little dimensions cut off from the street. That also made them harder to see which house was which.

I jerked my car to a stop, almost passing my house number. I slowly edged my car down the gravel driveway hearing the pops and crunches of pebbles beneath my tires. The path of the gravel road was sided with trees. The trees had this place completely cut off from the world, and that’s what I loved. I got out my phone and hit speed dial 2 as it started ringing I heard a happy voice on the other side,

“Hello?”

“Hey Shannon I’m here” I said looking around from my car.

“Oh goodie sweetie! The boys and I will be over in a few to help you unpack! I’m so excited!” she squealed into the phone.

I smiled “I love you, see you soon auntie”. I said

“See you soon sweetheart” she said and hung up

I got out of my car to observe the two-story house in front of me. This was my new home. I closed my eyes trying to stabilize the feelings I was having on forgetting my old memories of my last house.

I moved down here to the country, where my aunt and uncle live along with my cousins. I haven’t seen them in a really long time. Though I used to live here as a kid until I turned 14 and my parents got the terrible idea of moving into the city, but with my parents unseen passing, my aunt got a hold of me and told me to come down here and live next to her and my uncle since a couple of houses down from theirs there had been a house on sale for a very reasonable price. I looked up to the peaceful house; this house was too big for me. There was no way I was going to use up all this room, I thought to myself.

Hearing a specific crunching of gravel brought me back to reality from my thoughts as I saw my aunt and uncle driving up the driveway. I smiled as she practically jumped out of the car and rushed over to hug me. “Oh sweetie I’ve missed you so much!” she squealed into my hair as she kissed my forehead. I smiled; she was treating me more like a 5 year old then a 22 year old. I hugged her backand she pulled away and took a piece of stray curly blond hair and sighed, “God I’ve always envied your natural blond hair”. She sighed and I laughed and blushed a bit. She was a 45 year old women with reddish hair, this was not her natural hair color naturally it was brown but it the red complimented her blue eyes. I’ve always been jealous of that. My eyes are light green with yellow around the rim of my pupil. “Come on mom give her a break!” a teasing voice said and I looked over to see two boys and my smile brightened. It was Noah and Kalob. Noah had his dads brown eyes and brown buzz cut, he looked to be around 5’9 and he was crushing my measly 5’7. Plus he was five years younger then me! Kalob had the total surfer look going for him, he was around 6’1 and had vibrant blue eyes like his mom, and he was a year older then Noah. 

“Hey!” I said as they came over and hugged me making me feel very tiny,

“Where have you been?” Kalob asked smiling

“Indiana” I said laughing

“What’s it like down there?” asked Noah

“There’s lots of corn,” I said shrugging

I heard a thud and looked over to see my last cousin Tyler get out of a red truck and come over and develop my in a huge hug.

“Good to see you too Tyler” I laughed and he pulled back, he was huge! He had brown hair with deep brown eyes he looked to be around 6’2

“Why is everyone here so tall?” I asked, “It makes me feel so short” I frowned

“Maybe its because you are short” Tyler said and I scolded him making everyone laugh.

My uncle finally came into view and gave me an approving smile. He had dirty blond hair, almost brown with brown eyes.

“Come on guys this stuff isn’t going to unpack itself!” my uncle said as every started gathering around my U Haul and opening it up as my aunt came over

“The landowner came over and gave my key and everything already since we bought it…” she said

“What! I thought I was going to pay for it when I got here?!” I asked shocked

“Well sweetie think of it as our welcome back present!” she smiled and went with me up the creaky stairs to the porch and unlocked the door.

The house was gorgeous; the first thing you saw was a hallway with a staircase on the left side leading upstairs. There was a room to the right when you got past the foyer, it looked like the living room and past that there was the kitchen and to the left when you first walked in was the family room.

I walked back into the kitchen and opened up the back door to take a look outside and right as I opened the door some guy was about to knock on it

“Hey Tyle-” he said but then stopped and just stared at me I have to admit I was quiet taken aback with him too. He looked about 6’1 and he had this brown hair that was quite a mess. By the looks of it he didn’t even bother brushing it. His eyes were a shade of light blue and as I looked into them I felt myself go weak in the knees, my eyes traveled down to his lips as I saw they were parted and he went to say something but stopped and just stood there. I noticed that he was only wearing gym shorts and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD HE HAD ABS. I had to tear my eyes away from him and looked back up at his face

“um...” I said thinking of a polite way to say ‘why are you here?’ without sounding mean. Its not like minded him being here anyway.

He blinked a couple times “who are you?”

My eyes widened, I was taken aback by what he asked. He asked who I was, and he was the one who was about to waltz right into my house!

“I’m sorry, but I should be asking YOU that considering this is MY house” I said letting some of my anger flow and making it clear this was my property. I let out a little growl. Wait, what? What’s wrong with me? My eyes widened as did his when I heard the growl. It was quiet, but it was heard.

“Eric, what are you doing...” Tyler said trialing off looking at his stance and then he looked back up at Eric’s face. Eric looked from Tyler back to me. I turned around towards the hallway where Tyler was standing. Even though my back was turned I could feel Eric’s gaze on my back and it made me self-conscious.

“You know him?” I asked Tyler

Tyler watched Eric in a very amused way

“Alice this is Eric, Eric this is my cousin I’m always telling you about”. Tyler said

“Tyler I got to go help Shannon and place my stuff… I-I gotta go” I said, I quickly walked down the hallway and into the front lawn to get some more of my stuff. My aunt was helping me arrange my house since I was a very unorganized person and she was neat freak and a very organized person. She also loved organizing things therefore it was a win/win for both of us. I walked upstairs to go find a bedroom to claim as mine.
