Divergent Deaths

I took a deep breath, my focus all pinned on the aim I was going to take, soon enough Jeanine had stilled for long enough for me to take a shot. I threw with precision killing her instantly. Then we advanced taking out the members all except one.

"Stop the sim now." I shouted at the worker. They shook their head.

"Do it." I said punching them in the face over an over again.

"Ritza." Eric pulled me back and I stopped struggling against him when I saw Max come up behind with a shot of serum.

It was over finally. The divergents they were gone. We were free for now.
"Great work guys, meet tomorrow, we have to sort out a better system for sorting out divergents before they corrupt everything. For now go rest, the worst is over. Lastly be brave." With Max's speech over we all dispersed the rest of Dauntless would get settled back in and Eric and I headed back to his place. For half an hour after we showered we just sat on the couch in each others arms not a word was spoken. We had passed the first stage of the war and we were glad that we had made it.

"What'd you do to me Ritza?" He asked. I looked up at him surprised.
"Sorry?" I asked.
"Before you came, I didn't care for anyone, I had no reason to, then you came along and everything changed. I don't know why and I don't know how, but to be completely honest, it scares me. The way you make me feel." He finished refusing to look me in the eye.
"Such is the mysteries of life, Eric. Do you think my motivation to be here is still because I'm afraid to be factionless? I'm afraid to be away from you. I'm not a real Dauntless" I finish and he lifts my chin.
"Doe, I don't care what you are, as long as you're mine." I kissed him roughly.
"I'm all yours." I whispered in his ear and he growled. He picked me up and we went to the bedroom to enjoy a night of intimacy.

We both work up early that morning, we are after all, morning people. We prepare for Max's meeting in a comfortable silence. Hand in hand we walk to the conference room, the rest of the compound was on lock down. Dead bodies of divergents scattered the hall, we step over them, why give them any thought? It's not as though they gave our families any thought, it's not as though they gave us any thought, the survivors.
"Should I care?" I ask Eric gesturing to a erudite dressed divergent.

"Cause they cared when they murdered, when they got on with their lives like no of it mattered." He had a point, they didn't give a shit about us so why should I give a shit about them. For a successful day yesterday, no one in the conference room seemed particularly happy. It was a day of great loss, some of them lost friends and family, and we lost a few good men on our side. Max walked in a pile of folders in his hand. His hair was disheveled and there were bags under his eyes, it was obvious he hadn't gotten any sleep last night.
"Okay, it's time to get back to work, the other factions are not aware of our undercover operation. They know of Jeanine's serum and how we handled her.  Under no circumstances are any of you to leak this information, the last thing we need is the other divergents forming an allegiance to take us down. As for our work now, I have a folder full of tasks that need to be completed one for each team of two." He handed out the folders, Eric and I were on a team, our tasks included body disposal, and general clean up. How lame, I thought. The group dispersed and we all got to work we had two days before the lock down was over and the place would be crawling with Dauntless all over again.

We began rolling bodies into the chasm in silence.
"You know this reminds me of when I had to save you that time." He said lightly.
"You know you didn't have to save me, I was perfectly fine."
"Sure they were about to kick you into the chasm."
"You know, I've been thinking for a while but I never bothered to ask, why did you save me?" He froze for a second obviously surprised at the question.
"To be honest, I don't actually know, just when I saw you, something happened to me, I didn't know why but I had to stop them from hurting you, seeing them hurt you was hurting me." He took a deep breath.

"Wow, that was way more than I expected."
"What did you expect?" He asked.

"I just thought maybe you saved me so none of your initiates were killed before they got to endure all the torture of initiation, but then I realised the other two died, so I wasn't sure."
"Ritza, I knew what I was doing when I defended you, I didn't stop when they were unconscious because I didn't know they were, I didn't stop because I didn't want them to continue to be able to hurt you, I didn't want them to live when they caused you pain, most importantly I was angry because I wasn't there earlier to protect you." He finished as he pushed another body into the chasm.
"You know Eric, you don't have to protect me, I'm amity, I'm not worth your protection, I'm not even worth your time." He lifted up my chin.
"Doe, you are worth absolutely everything, no matter what you think, no matter what you say, and you earned your spot here in Dauntless regardless." He kissed me and pulled me close. I sighed in contentment, how did I get so freaking lucky?
