*Tony's POV*
The sound of Stephen's heartbeat lulled my wolf to sleep and kept us both content. But that didn't stop my body's sudden desire for water.
I left my mate's side and made way down to the kitchen when something caught my wolfs attention.
I walked around in the room that appeared to be a study of some sort. Bookshelves lined the walls but didn't pull away from the small couch and table that sat near the window. I looked up and down at the different books until I came across one that got my wolf's attention.
The book was large and bound in black leather with silver inscriptions along its spine. It looked to have a shimmering aura to it, almost as if the book itself was alive.
Mate my wolf said. That's weird. Why would my wolf say mate to a book?
"Can't sleep?" Linda's voice rang from thin air.
"Jesus!! Where'd you come from?" I asked, a little more harshly than intended.
"I heard someone come downstairs. I didn't think it was Stephen. He likes to sleep in a bit."
I laugh to myself at that. My mate does enjoy his sleep. Just from that thought alone, I found myself drifting off to thoughts of his beautiful sleeping face; my wolf missing the contact of our mate, wanting me to go back and wrap him in our arms.
"Yeah, I just got up to get some water, but I wandered in here. Sorry."
Linda laughed a quiet laugh, one that sounded like bells and radiated warmth. Stephen could do the same thing when he laughed or smiled.
"It's fine. Why in here though?" She asked.
"I'm not sure. I just felt like coming in here. My wolf keeps pulling me towards this book." I lifted my hand to touch the spine and was met with a small, but strong shock of electricity.
"That's the book of Black Moons. It's the most powerful book known to our kind and it's as alive and you and me."
"Why is my wolf drawn to it? I mean I look at it and my wolf says 'Mate' but that can't be right. Stephen's my mate. I had a hard enough time accepting my mate had a penis, I don't think I'm gonna be okay if I'm mated to a book too." I dead panned.
Linda looked thoughtful for a second before realization ran across her face.
"You're wolf is attracted to its essence. It's bound with the same power as Ste-" Her eyes went wide as she covered her mouth.
"What do you mean it's bound with the same power as Stephen? Like protected?" I asked, worry lining my voice.
"Um, yes. Yes of course. They're protected. That's all." Her heartbeat spiked with each sentence.
"Linda, why are you lying?"
Her face paled as she sighed and wrapped her arms around herself. She gestured for me to sit and I did.
"The magic that binds the book is what binds Stephen and his abilities." My eyes shot up at the word abilities.
"What do you mean abilities?"
A look of sorrow twisted her features and she sighed.
"There's a lot about Stephen that you don't know, Tony. There's a lot about himself that he doesn't know."
"He's my mate Linda, what aren't you telling me?"
"Stephen is like me, only far more powerful. He's what we call a Grand Warlock; a being of immense power and ability. He's the first one to be born in four centuries. Grand Warlocks and Grand Witches are genetically made to house limitless power. They're born to lead covens of witches and warlocks. Stephen was born to bring our kind into a new age of magic. But that cannot happen.
