Kol's POV

Chapter 14: Loss

Lacey squeezes my hand tightly as we walked towards the building where her brother is likely to be found. Abandoned, shabby, and vacant-looking. An old hospital maybe. "Are you sure this is it?" Lacey whispers, giving me a skeptical glance. I nodded. "Perks of having witches to threaten outside of the quarter, location spells at my demand." I chuckle. The sides of her mouth curve upward, but her smile isn't genuine. She's terrified. Terrified to find Skylar's body cold on the floor. I remember that feeling well. I remember mourning for my brother and crying for my loss. I don't want Lacey to feel the pain that I felt. I don't want the pain of watching her go through it.

I hear her breathe in deeply as I open the door. The first thing I notice is a girl. Dark brown hair and brown eyes. Glasses. She stares at me, a spark of recognition in her eyes. But it isn't her who makes my stomach churn. Lying at the girl's feet, a boy no older than fifteen. He has light brown hair, he's unconcious. No. Not unconcious. Dead.

Lacey peeks out from behind me. "Skylar?" She runs to the boy, ignoring the girl towering over him. She reaches for his hand, checking his pulse. My eyes fill with sorrow for her. I don't have to check for a heartbeat to know the truth. And I know she disn't either. "No." She whispers.

"No, no, no."

I take her hand. "Lace - "

"NO! Skylar!" She cries. She tries to shake him awake, but it's no use. "Darling," I whisper. "Please." She screams, shaking him again. She ignores me, screaming at her little brother to stop pretending to be dead, calling out his name. Pleading, begging. "Lacey..." I whisperer again. She only ignores me once more, looking up at the dark-haired girl. "How could you stand by and just watch? How? He's 14!" The girl gives Lacey a sad glance.

"I'm sorry. Marcel did this. To get to you. He said something about you not following the rules." She gestures to me. Lacey looked at me. "I knew I shouldn't have told you! It's my fault. It's my fault. Skylar!" I crouch beside her. "No. It's not your fault." Lacey clutches her brother's hand. Her tears are across her face, her sobs almost audible. "It is. Marcel wanted to get to me. He killed him to get to me! Kol, my brother died because of ME!" She sobs, pulling her legs to her chest.

I wrap my arms around her, trying to calm her down. "I left him. I should've looked for him. I should've spent more time with him. He's gone. He's gone. I did this." She cried. "No. No, Lacey. Marcel did this. Listen to me. This isn't your fault. Marcel did this." This only causes her to cry harder. The dark-haired girl told me she'd leave us alone, and hurried off, leaving me to comfort my brother's girl.

"I can't d-do this." Lacey stutters. I can tell she's going into shock, her whole body is shaking. Lacey runs her hands through Skylar's hair, continuing to cry. "I know, sweetheart." I whispered to her. I knew nothing I could ever say would make up for the pain she feels. I still mourn over Henrik and Finn to this day. "Shhh, Lacey. It's going to be okay. We have to get you home, and - "

"NO! I won't leave him." She cried, squeezing her brother's cold hand. "Kol... Don't make me. Please." She turned to look at me, her eyes full of pain. Loss. "We have to go home. We can't stay here."

"We have to go home."

"No. Kol, no. I can't leave him. He's all I have left. Everyone else is gone." She looks up at me wih the saddest expression, her cheeks tear-stained and her heart broken. It was across her face.

"Lacey. We have to go. Please don't make me force you."

But she just looked back at her brother, squeezing her legs tighter around herself, and sobbing louder and louder. She whispered 'no' over and over. Broken.
