The Affair

Chapter 5

Ryan's POV

Wow, I swear Thomas wasn't like that when we were at school together, I know we were kinda assholes in school but this is his wife and kid and he's being a total shithole about it

"Ignore her, she's just a bit hissy at the moment" he tells me and I have to fight the urge to punch him or something, that's a disgusting way to speak about any woman, let alone the mother of your child

I mean he seems to have gotten really lucky, what the hell is he doing treating her like his? She's really beautiful and funny, I've only spent like five minutes with her and I can see that

I chase after her up the stairs with the rest of my stuff, I follow her into the spare room, it's pretty big but then again I'm kinda used to that and I know Thomas was too so I wasn't expecting much less

"So, you and Thomas" I try and make conversation with Chloe

"What about us?" She asks as she puts my bag down on the bed

"You two seem...well....very different" I point out and she nods

"Yeah well I guess that's just something about our backgrounds" she replied, so she has an interesting background too, well she just gets more and more intriguing doesn't she?

"What does that mean?" I push, I can't help wanting to know more about her, I don't know why, I just can't

"Well I was raised in a small town and we just about got by whereas Thomas was raised in luxury, he's a good guy, he just doesn't have the same family values as me, his parents wasn't particularly involved with him as far as I can gather, mine were my everything" she explains, wow, she's really amazing

I can't imagine not having had everything I did, I mean yeah my parents got divorced when I was like 15 but at least I got to live this life I've gotten

"That sounds quite hard" I say in reference to her childhood

"It was at times, but my parents did their best and we got through it" she tells me, and Thomas isn't hanging on this girls every word why?

"Wow" I let slip out and she smiles awkwardly, okay how does a person awkwardly smile in such an adorable way?

"What about you, you and Thomas are 'mates'?" She asks me and I chuckle while raising my eyebrows, slightly judging my past friendship decisions, but then again I needed this job out here and he was the reason I managed to get it, Hannah's life is out here so I'm out here

"You could say that, we were in school and stuff but I guess we'd lost touch until recently, I'm so thankful for this, you guys are so good to let me stay here while my place is being sorted out ready" I thank her and she smiles and nods

"Of course" she replies, I don't think she was actually given much of an option but yeah still good of her to not just be really cold to me

"I think we've definitely both changed since school" I tell her and she nods, she's clearly quite convinced Thomas has changed, this seems kinda weird, I definitely wouldn't have seen him with a girl like her, and by that I mean a girl with an actual brain, he never dated any of those in the time we were hanging out

"So why'd you decide to come out to New York?" She asks after a few moments of awkward silence

"Well..." I start but get cut off by a baby's cries

"Sorry" she apologises hurriedly and runs out of the room

Chloe's POV

Ryan seems REALLY nice, he actually seems to care about me as a person, Thomas never really talks about me, it's always about work or something

I head into the nursery and see Archie sat up glaring at the door

"Hey buddy, what's up?" I ask rhetorically while I try and figure out the answer by then he waves his arms at me and I realise he just wants some cuddles

I smile and roll my eyes as I pick him up out of his crib, I sit him on my hip and go back in to see if Ryan needs anything

"You need anything else?" I ask and he shakes his head

"Nope, I'm great thanks" he replies with a warm smile, I wish Thomas would give me a few more of those that he actually meant rather than an apology for something

"Okay, well then goodnight, I'll see you tomorrow" I tell him and he smiles

"Goodnight, bye little guy" he says and then waves at Archie in such a cute way, Archie clearly loves it because he's giggling and clapping

I smile at him one last time and then leave the room, closing the door behind me

Ryan was more engaged with Archie just then than his father ever is

No! I need to stop thinking like this!
