We ran for a few more minutes till we almost could not run or breath anymore. We stopped in a bit of a clearing, we were probably a few miles away from where the camp rested. I dropped my bag and sat on a big rock next to Adrian and took deep breaths.
"We have a few miles left till we get to the city." Henrick told us. "Then we can get to the train station. It's almost right outside of town, there should be a train waiting for us.""How is the train running? And why would anyone help us?"
"The train's running because this one works on a different system, and it's underground. We managed to contact the unit in Spring field before everything shut down telling them the plan so they could send some men down to get us from the train station. We don't have time to paint ourselves or put the contacts in so we will just have to keep low and get there before sunlight."
We all silently nodded and picked up our stuff ready to go. We walked quickly in the dark, all of us slightly jumping every time the slightest bush moved, or leaves crunched.
As we walked in silence, my mind drifted back to the boy, I wondered what his life once was like. Maybe if his parents were alive, maybe they were infected too. My heart hurt as I kept repeating in my mind that he was a boy. Just a boy, so innocent and had much to live for... And I took his life.
I looked down, biting my lip. I had killed a person, dead, they were never going to see another day. Guilt filled me from head to toe, almost overflowing. Then Adian walked up.
"Hey, you did what you had to do." He grabs my hand, sparks fly up in nervous excitement but I hold composure. "He was going to kill Doc."
"I-I know but... He was still so innocent, I'm sure there was something else I could have done."
"Trust me, there wasn't. He was diseased, he probably was not going to live anyways."
"O-ok." I said shakingly, not really believing him.
He gives my hand a squeeze and lets go walking up to Doc, talking about how he believes we could eliminate the infection and cure everyone. "Maybe there's a leader who controls them, and if we kill that leader, we will release them."
I stopped listening in after a while, tuning their theories out as I look around the forest. The beautiful needle green trees surrounds us. It smells of pines, maples, and crisp, fresh wood. The moon shine through the forest every once and a while, glistening of droplets of water, resting on a needle or pinecone.
I never really had much time to think about how beautiful this place is. I wonder why we never went camping, or at least visited the forests, they were so secluded, and peaceful.
My thoughts were interrupted by the sight of the edge of the city, far off in the distance. Henrick states the obvious, "we're here."
