Maya's POV
After school, I headed over to Riley's. She left ahead of me since I had to stay behind to talk to Mr. Mathews. I thought back to our conversation.
I walked into his classroom.
"So, you teach high school now?"
He looked at me and smiled,"Yeah, I couldn't leave Riley alone."
I just nodded and made my way to his desk,"You wanted to talk to me?"
"Yeah. I wanted to know why you left."
"Well, because I thought you would break up our friendship anyways."
"No, I know that's not it. You wouldn't abandon your friendship just because I say so. Why'd you leave?"
I bit my lip. Why couldn't I tell him if what happened happened years ago?
He looked at me understandingly.
"If you don't want to tell me you don't have to. What matters is that your back. Please cheer Riley up. It might not seem like it, but she really wants
to forgive you."
"She's really mad about it."
"Yeah. But I think you should get to know her. People change over time."
"So I was told... I know I ruined her life. I'm sorry."
"That's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
"Just. Get to know Riley. She misses you."
"Okay. Thanks Mr. Mathews."
"No problem. Need a ride to my house?"
"No thanks. Bye."
Why couldn't I tell him? It's not like I like Riley anymore right? I know he would accept me for who I am now but I guess i'm scared. I'm not ready to come out yet.
Riley's POV
I was sitting in my bay window when I heard tapping at my window.
I was scared at first, but remembered that Maya was back. I smiled when I saw her. I opened the window to let her in. She sat down and let out a breathe. "Wow. This still looks the same.", she smiled.
"Yeah...", I agreed. "So, wanna work on our project?", she said. "Sure.", I said,"Well, he said we have to get to know each other. I haven't seen you for a couple years. How've you been?" She raised her eyebrows, opened her mouth and began,"Um well... I went to Oak Cove Middle School like half an hour away. I met a couple people."
"Did you get into any trouble without me?", I asked. She bit her lip,"Uh well. You were always kind of with me. I couldn't do anything bad without thinking you would be disappointed in me, so I never did."
"That's good... You met new friends?", I said. She nodded,"Yeah but they all kinda hated me after I broke up with one of them." Maya dated other people? I couldn't help but have a little jealousy inside. "Really?! You dated? Who is he?", I questioned her.
Maya looked hesitant,"She. It's a she." I got even more jealous. "I'm bisexual.", she admitted. "Oh Maya. Im proud of you for coming out to me. I love you no matter what.", I pulled her into a hug. "I'm never letting you leave again.", I murmured into her shoulder. "Thanks Riles. I'm sorry I left.", she said.
I pulled away. "It doesn't matter anymore. What matters is you came back." She gave me a soft smile.
"So how did you know?", I asked. "Know what?", she furrowed her eyebrows. "That you were bisexual.", I asked.
She raised her eyebrows and looked at me like I was the dumbest person alive. I furrowed my eyebrows,"What?" Then I remembered our conversation at school. "Ohhhh", I finally said.
I looked at her,"Maya about that-" She interrupted me," No Riles it okay, I don't want things to be awkward. "No.", I began,"When you left. I was so upset I couldn't even explain it. I was heartbroken. I wanted to hate you, but I couldn't. And that's when I realized, that I was in love with you the whole time. I thought that it was wrong, and maybe that was why you left. So I became depressed for a while, locking everybody out of my life. Until I remembered that you wouldn't want me like this. So I faced my fears and came out. Maya, I'm gay."
Maya smiled slightly and brought me into a huge hug. "I'm sorry I put you through all that. I'm sorry I ran away from my problems.", she began to cry.
After a couple minutes of straight sobbing. We finally pulled apart. "Now that your here. I so happy I don't know what to do.", I said. She looked at me for a few seconds and smirked,"I do."
She brought her hand to my chin. I leaned in without hesitation and brought our lips together. It was like, nothing else mattered in the world. Like all that I went through was finally worth it.
I brought my arms to her neck and deepened the kiss. She dropped her hands down to my waist. I smiled against her lips, her giving a small smile back. Finally, we pulled away, resting our foreheads against each other's.
"Riley?", Maya said. "Yeah peaches?" I said."Will you be my girlfriend?", she asked. I had a huge grin and brought her into another kiss. After a while we pulled away.
"So is that a yes?,", she asked. "I would love to be your girlfriend Maya.", I smiled.
