"We're gonna find me in here?", I ask as Riley places a blank canvas on the stool."Yes. This is where you are, Maya."
"A blank canvas"
"Fill it. Paint"
"Paint what?"
"What ever you feel."
I sigh,"Right now, I'm feeling a little angry."
"Good. Who are you angry at?"
"You.", I say. "For making me fall in love with you knowing you'll never love me back.", I mentally add.
"Okay. Well, Shawn did have to fight my with my father before he figured out who he was."
I don't want us to be like your father and Shawn. And I already know who I am.
"But, i'm sure we'll be more mature than that right?", she adds.
We'll see.
I pick up the paint brush and start painting streaks of blue on the blank canvas as I say,"I was a little girl, and I climbed through an open window because I heard singing. I was attracted to what I saw inside, it was someone safe."
"Hello.", she says.
"This little ray of sunshine who didn't have a care in the world. You had everything. Everything about you was perfect."
"Awww. Maya.", she smiles, showing her deep dimples, still not knowing the point i'm getting to.
"Everything was going great. Until 7th grade. All you could ever talk about was Huckleberry. How you loved everything about him."
"I love everything about you too. You're the sister I never ha-.
I stop her by painting her face,"I know Riley! I know that's all we'll ever be."
"You're back!", she yells,"Where's the purple!"
"Not the purple!", I yell as she dumps the paint on me.
I look at her for a moment and then dump a bucket of paint on her. Then we run into each other, lathering paint all over each other.
"That's not all you are peaches! You're my partner in crime, my extraordinary relationship!"
"Riley you don't get the point! I'm in love with you, how can you not see it! I'm in love with you and it hurts so bad."
She stops dead in her tracks,"'Maya how could you not only tell me until now?"
"I was scared to lose you."
She giggles,"And all this time I've been trying to hide it."
"Hide what?"
She comes closer, putting her hand under my chin. "This.", she says as she brings us closer, connecting our lips.
I kiss back, moving my hands down to her waist. Our lips mixing the colors purple and blue.
Suddenly, the door opens, revealing our art teacher.
"Sometimes I like to paint when it's quiet. You know the quietest place there is? My classroom in the middle of the night. How could I be so wrong?"
Riley and I awkwardly laugh, moving out of the position we were in and quickly apologize.
