it was the first time after Daryl escaped the sanctuary that Jesus saw the scars all over his back. He knew that he'd have to wait until he'd be able to ask about them. He knew it was going to be a tough subject for Daryl to talk about.
It was about two months after they both said "I love you" for the first time. They're both in Paul's trailer. Jesus on the bed reading a book, and Daryl at the table, carving random lines into the table to keep himself occupied.
Jesus closes his book and sets it down next to him. He swallows the lump in his throat.
"What are they from?" he finally breaks the silence.
Daryl immediately stops. He knows exactly what his boyfriend is talking about. "My old man." He simply responds, but doesn't even glance at Jesus.
And that's what Jesus was afraid of. He was afraid of finding out that this sweet, loving man was abused by his own father. Sure, Daryl has his flaws, but that doesn't mean that he deserved to get abused.
"If ya didn't wanna know you shouldn't of asked." Daryl spits out kind of aggressively.
"No, no it's just. I have scars too Daryl. Sure they aren't visible, but they're still there." Jesus says before he even thinks.
"It ain't a damn competition." Daryl is now glaring at the man.
"I didn't mean it that way. I just meant, we're not all that different. People always made fun of me and beat me up for being gay. It left some pretty big emotional scars. You're dad was an asshole who gave you physical scars." Jesus takes a deep breath. "You and Maggie and all of the others have made me feel like I actually belong somewhere, like I have a real family. And I love you guys so much. We have scars, both physical and emotional, but that doesn't make us weak. It makes us strong, and we can handle our shit. You probably know that though, but now I know it because of you and Maggie."
Daryl's face softens, he goes over to Jesus and kisses him on the forehead. "You deserve to be somewhere where you feel like you belong, because you do belong." He says before leaving the trailer.
Jesus smiles and picks his book back up and starts to read again.

I honestly didn't think this book would get so far. I started writing it as a joke thinking nobody would read it, but now it has over 1,000 reads!
Thank you guys so much for the feedback and the votes, it really means a lot to me!
