Sans is a soldier in the Human Vs. Monster War (Call it what you'd like). Papyrus sends his brother letters from home, telling him how he's doing and such.
Maybe at some point a soldier on the human's side intercepts one of the letters and retires after feeling guilty. They realize monsters also have families, and the war is just unreasonable.
