It was late in the afternoon when Lolo went back to the farm. She could not wait to narrate what the evil woman, Nwada, did to her in the morning, to her mother. Worst still, she said, Nwada prevented her from coming to the farm to tell. Her mother listened with half an ear, while making soothing noise to pacify her. Lolo was not satisfied until her mother promised her she will give Nwada a beating. They were about sitting down to have supper when Nwada walked into the compound. Urediya nno, Mgbechi greeted. Ure is Nwada's pet name from her husband, meaning her husband's pride. You met us well, she continued as she rushed into the kitchen to bring a stool for Nwada. Nwada thanked her and told her she just finished eating before leaving the house. Lolo was surprise at the friendly tone which the women were conversing. She coughed deliberately to draw her mother's attention to herself and the promise she made to beat Nwada, when this did not get the desired reaction, she let out a loud yawn. The two women blatantly ignored her, in fact, it seems they have completely forgotten her. Lolo caught herself dozing after this. After nodding for the umpteenth time, she went into their bed room to get her mat. She laid it as close to her mother as she could. Then she lied down and immediately slept off. The two women were still murmuring in a low voice. Mgbechi my friend, Nwada continued, are you sure Nnakwe can take care of you? Nnakwe seems to be a little over burdened now, two wife's and five children, not to talk about his late brother's wife that he inherited. More so, he is not even from Ngodo, we may not be able to do thorough findings on him, supposing his family has a history of madness or leprosy? God forbid , we may find out too late. One cannot be too careful with things like these you know. We don't know much about them. If you ask me, I will say you should consider Obioma of Isieke, who? Mgbechi asked, you know him don't you? Nwada answered, the hunter? the same, Nwada answered. Dark and sturdy build. Their house is near the Odara tree, on the way to Eke market. Yes, I remember now Mgbechi answered, Eliza's husband, I don't think he has interest in me. He does Nwada insisted. He speaks well of you. Mgbechi, the truth is, he has asked me more than once to talk to you on his behalf, but, I have to get permission from my master before embarking on this kind of errand for a man. I understand, Mgbechi answered, I think he is somebody I respect. Tell him to speak up before the elders. I will not disgrace him. Having settled the business that brought her, Nwada and Mgbechi went on to other random village gossips. Have you heard that Obiageli is getting married, Nwada began, which Obiageli? Mgbechi asked, how many of them do you know? Nwada retorted. Surely, you don't mean Mazi Ude's first daughter, Mgbechi maintained, one and the same. irachagbam! Mgbechi exclaimed, who is marrying Obiageli? Is the man from this village? He said he is, Nwada answered and you will not believe who when I tell you. Who? Mgbechi asked, guess, Nwada teased
How will I know? May be Odenigbo the mad man. Wrong, Nwada laughed in glee, guess again, please Mgbechi begged. Call me elder sister, am I begging? Mgbechi asked, o yes you are, Nwada insisted while laughing helplessly at Mgbechi's pleading eyes , alright, let me pity you. Ichie Akukalia wants to make her his third wife. I heard his second wife, Ezinne has warned him not to so much as contemplate it or she will bring down the roof on him. And what is his reaction? Mgbechi asked? He is going on with his plan. In fact, they said Obiageli insisted that unless he pays for her to join the maidens going in for mgbede ( fattening room) this year, he should forget any thought of marriage to her. Mgbechi was all eyes as she cracked her knuckles in wonder. And Ichie Akukalia agreed to that? They said he has already given her father money to start the preparation. Some peoples chi does not blink for one minute, Mgbechi answered enviously, in fact her chi is wide awake, to think she is still able to make such a good catch after all she has done in this village and beyond. My sister Nwada answered, I am speechless. You remember the rumour about her and Nnaji, how they were almost made to cleans the land, when two of them were caught half naked at a cassava plot four or was it five years ago?. Are you telling a stranger in this village? I witnessed everything with my naked eyes, Nwada replied. Was it not to hide her shame that her father sent her to Umuezeala, her mothers village? Well, Mgbechi chipped in, the whole thing seems to have brought her nothing but luck. I learnt she even went to school there and she read up to standard three. Eh? Nwada, retorted sharply, I heard she only learnt how to sew. Yes, Mgbechi replied, that too. That is where she learnt to sew all these short Calabar gowns she had been wearing to roll her buttocks from side to side. Tufiaa, a woman should wear druss or knicker under her cloth. I don't think she wears druss Nwada my sister, the way her buttocks go wagha, wagha wagha, a woman should hold herself together while walking. True words Mgbechi, the simple truth, but don't even think of telling her, you will regret it. That girl is wild. I pity Ichie Akukalia, but I pity the members of his family more.
Do you know what? What? Mgbechi asked eagerly, I wonder what Ezinne will do. Me too, especially as she is also a wild one . Seems Akukalia has a peculiar taste in women. Hahaha Nwada laughed as she got up to go. Good night my sister, good night Mgbechi answered smiling. Look well on your way homeoo. Oo Nwada answered from the entrance of the compound.

Pressing my ear to the wall and trying to listen in on the conversation xd.
