There was a moment of silence when Aaron and Hunter simply stared at each other, without speaking, without doing anything, as we all waited for someone to break the silence that had fallen between us.
Nobody moved.
This was so weird.
I glanced at Aaron's face and saw his eyes narrow and quickly glance at me and then back at Hunter.
The movement was so quick that if I blinked I would have missed it.
I turned ever so slightly towards Hunter, and to my surprise, saw him do the same thing.
What the fuck is going on?
I coughed and instantly all three sets eyes were on me.
"So..." I said turning towards Aaron while gesturing towards Gwen.
"Gwen told me about you earlier. I'm Spencer Shaffer," I said.
"Well then I suppose you already know my name," Aaron beamed.
I laughed and then said to Hunter: "Hunter, meet Aaron. Aaron, Meet Hunter."
Both boys nodded.
Okay?
"We should probably head back to the group. Stacy will probably freak out when she finds out we're gone," said Gwen picking up her backpack.
At least one person here actually had some brain cells.
"She probably thought we were all making out or something," said Aaron.
"That's disgusting!" replied Gwen while I laughed.
"I'm going to go catch up with some of my other friends so I'll see you guys later!" Hunter said as he bent down to pick up his stuff.
"Okay, adios my friend!" said Gwen as she began walking back towards the group.
Did she really just say that?
And I thought she was the one who had brain cells.
As Aaron and I started to follow Gwen, I quickly glanced back at Hunter and he shot me a wink.
Cue butterflies.
I sighed (for like the millionth time).
I just might actually like this camp.
Remember, I said might so let not jump to conclusions now people.
-
It turned out that we had to walk another hour and a half before we reached the camp.
And let me tell you, it was NOT fun.
The only thing that made the journey bearable was learning more about Gwen, and especially Aaron.
One thing I learned quickly was that he is fucking hilarious.
I sincerely doubt I have ever laughed so hard in my entire life.
The entire time he was cracking jokes and saying really, REALLY, bad pickup lines to Gwen and me.
It was comedy gold.
After a while she got kind of pissed off and started yelling at him which only made me laugh harder.
I bet everyone who had to walk around us thought we were mental.
I couldn't have cared less.
I eventually managed to calm down as we finally arrived at camp.
"THIS is where we have to live for the next month?" Gwen gasped as she stared at the "camp" that came into view.
It consisted of a big cabin a little ways away, located by a large lake.
The building itself looked 500 years old and was going to fall down any second.
20 or so cabins, I think, were located on the opposite side of the clearing and a few other worn-down buildings were scattered around.
"Ugh," said Aaron as he walked up beside me.
"You can say that again," I said glumly.
Gwen groaned.
Stacy then ushered everyone (which took quite a while, mind you) toward the 'dining pavilion' where we then would we sorted into cabins.
She then started blabbering about God knows what until a lady, who looked to be in her late 40's, entered the pavilion.
Her hair was pulled back into a bun and she wore librarian glasses that dangled off her nose.
The way she was dressed made me think of her walking through the streets of New York City talking on a smartphone and carrying a briefcase.
Cough professional cough.
The room fell silent.
"Hello everyone," she said, her voice echoing around the otherwise silent room.
"I'm Mrs. Mancini and I am the head councilor at Camp Hazelbrooke," she continued.
Aaron whispered in my ear, "Did she say Mrs. Man?"
I burst out laughing but quickly coughed to cover it up.
Needless to say, everyone looked at me.
I glared at Aaron as he smirked at me.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mrs. Man(cini) glare directly at Aaron and I in disgust.
What was she thinking; I didn't have to listen to her.
Eventually she continued and started blabbering on about random camp activities and shit.
Needless to say, I zoned out big-time.
I stared at the back of the kid’s head who was standing in front of me until I felt a tap on my right arm.
It was Gwen.
As I snapped out of my daydream, she said, "Come on Spencer, follow me."
She walked off before I could say anything otherwise.
I started to follow her and Aaron started to follow me.
I wasn't paying attention, so I didn't notice when she stopped in front of a wooden wall with a piece of paper tacked to it.
Being me, I didn't stop in time so I ended up walking into her.
It turned out that Aaron didn't either and he ended up walking into both of us, squishing Gwen and I up against the wall.
"Get off me!" Gwen cried as we both struggled to move.
"Nah, I don't feel like moving," he laughed.
Randomly, I noticed he smelled like cinnamon and some other spice I couldn't quite place.
He smelled good, like really good.
But that doesn't matter (to you anyway).
Eventually, he backed up and Gwen was able to point to the paper we knocked on the floor.
She picked it up and scanned the paper.
"Looks like Spencer and I are in cabin 20A and you're in cabin 20B," she said to Aaron.
"A and B? What does that mean?" I asked.
Gwen shrugged her shoulders.
I glanced at Aaron.
He said, "Well, we're going to find out. Come on!"
And with that he headed out the door, not waiting for Gwen and me.
Nice (not).
Gwen and I looked at each other, laughed, and then walked towards the exit.
"20 bucks he gets us lost," said Gwen.
"You're on," I chuckled.
