Overload 3-That could change things
I took the weekend to calm down and by Monday I had all but forgotten the incident with Kale. I mean nothing happened right? No need to freak out over nothing. So come Monday morning I was back in chemistry, bored as hell, everything running smoothly as usual. “Maximum!” My teacher Mr. Morris yelled red in the face, he had clearly been talking to me for a while. Of course I hadn’t heard him as I was daydreaming about being anywhere but in his classroom. “Maximum, can you answer my question?”
“Huh?” I looked at the figures on the bored and used my gift for science to quickly calculate the answer. “62 meters per second, sir,” I said with a cocky grin. The shock showed on his face for a second before he spoke.
“Very good Mr. Lewis, pay attention next time.” Then he went back to lecturing and left me alone for the rest of the class period. When the bell rang for lunch people bolted for the door and I leisurely walked to the Cafeteria. I saw Jake and Nick sitting in our usual spot, they waved and I headed in their direction. A thick arm shot out in front of me, stopping me in my tracks.
“Where are you going Max?” Gabe mocked.
“What do you want?”
“Did you give up hanging out with that nobody, Mattkinson?”
“Don’t be talking shit Gabe so he’s an acquaintance of mine, why do you care?”
“He’s bad news; he’s already made you give up one of your friends.”
“If you’re referring to yourself, you were never my friend. Now I have better people to be talking to.” I retorted, pushing past him to head to our table.
“What was that all about?” Jake asked me as I sat down across from him.
“You know Gabe he’s just trying to start something as usual.” I replied stealing a cookie from Nick’s plate which earned me a hateful glare.
“Hey guys!” Bethany said as she sat down next to me. “Great party Friday, huh? Well of course they always are! So what’s the latest scoop? Did you hear that Katie Black is totally prego? I personally don’t believe it I mean who would sleep with her? What kind of cookie is that Max?” She said this all incredibly fast in one breath. We all stared at her dumbfounded. “What?” She asked touching her face to see if there was something there worth staring at.
“You talk really fast.” Jake said.
“You think really slow,” she countered with that signature head bob that all girls seem to have mastered.
“Touché.” Nick said causing Jake to glower at him, which just earned a shrug from Jake. Just then I looked up to see Kali Mattkinson standing in the corner of the cafeteria alone and she was crying. “I’ll be back.” I excused myself from the table.
“Kali?” I said approaching her. “Is something wrong.” If there was one thing I knew Kali and Kale ate lunch together every day with their friends. Come to think of it I Kale hadn’t been in Chemistry class today. “Where’s Kale?” I asked when she didn’t answer. This was clearly the wrong thing to say as she began full on bawling. She fell against my chest and I had nothing else to do but to awkwardly comfort her. After a few minutes of standing there she pulled away and began drying her tears.
“Kali what happened?”
She sniffed, “my parents kicked Kale out last night, and I haven’t seen him since. I’m scared for him, he was really upset when he left. “
“Do you have any idea where he could have gone?” I asked.
“Your guess is as good as mine.” I grabbed her by the wrist and began to walk towards the door. “Where are we going Max?” She asked still sniffling.
“We’re going to look for him.”
“Really?”
“We’ll look all night if we have to.”
After about two hours of driving around we had gotten absolutely nowhere. We pulled up to about the eighth park that we had looked at so far. We were just about to leave when Kali asked me to stop. She jumped out of the car and ran over to where a boy was laying on a bench on the far side of the park. I jogged after her to find her arms wrapped around Kale.
“Where the hell have you been? Did you sleep out here?”
“I didn’t exactly have anywhere else to go.”
“I could change that,” I interrupted their moment.
“Really?” A wide smile was on Kali’s face.
“Yeah, I mean if you want to Kale. I have a huge house and I’m on my own most of the time.”
“I couldn’t impose like that.” He whispered shyly.
“What part about huge house all to myself don’t you get? I could use the company and you don’t exactly have very many options.”
“I don’t know…”
“What are friends for?” I asked and his eyes seemed to sparkle at my word choice. Something told me that for whatever reason people weren’t usually very nice to Kale and I couldn’t understand why. “Come on, it looks like rain let’s get out of here?”
We dropped Kali off at their, her house and she brought Kale some of his things. Then we drove back to my place and parked out front.
“You shouldn’t have done this,” He muttered.
“Can you answer me one question?” I asked ignoring his comment.
“Sure,” he mumbled staring at his hands.
“Why did your parents kick you out?” I asked looking at over at him.
“If I answer that, it will change things. You won’t want me to move in with you anymore.” He still refused to look at me.
“I promise it won’t,”
“I’m gay,” he said looking me directly in the eyes for the first time since we had met his dazzling blue eyes piercing into my own brown ones. “Max, I’m gay.”
That could change things…
What does this mean? Is Max gay too? Will Kale still move in with him? Comment Please!!!!
