Overload 14-Gossip

The next morning I didn’t want to get up. I was lying with my head on Kale’s bare chest and it felt comfortable. We hadn’t done anything last night but it had felt nice all the same. Ugh. I had to get up and get ready for school. If I missed another day of school my dad would go ballistic. This is the first time that I ever actually wished he would leave town. “Kale, get up.” I whispered and he didn’t move. He was a heavy sleeper and he was definitely not a morning person. “Get up you lazy bum!” Still nothing, I pressed my lips against his and after a second his started moving with mine. I then pulled back and got up.

He sat up and stared annoyed at me. “What was that for?”

“To wake you up, we have got to get to school.” I threw on a pair of possibly clean basketball shorts and a plain white t-shirt. Kale pulled a pair of black jeans on and a white t-shirt as well. We dragged ourselves down the stairs and outside to my truck skipping breakfast in order to make up for lost time. When we got to the school the morning proved to be uneventful. People were murmuring about the argument with Trent, and my split lip. Some of them had even heard of Maya’s pregnancy already.

When we were sitting at the lunch table the rumors about Maya and I had grown. Hardly anybody spoke of Trent anymore. The biggest offender was Brittany Sanders who was sitting at the table next to ours. She thought she was whispering to her friends but it was quite easy to make out her shrill voice from where we sat. I saw Maya leave the room with tears streaming down her face and I realized that this had to stop. I stood up marching over to Brittany’s table. She just looked up at me.

“Hey Max,” She said batting her eyelashes and placing her hand on my bicep. The girl had been trying to get into my pants for years. The nerve of some people, she had just been gossiping about my ex-girlfriend being pregnant and then she had the nerve to be flirting with me.

“Do you have something to say to me?” I asked, the anger somewhat clear in my voice.

“W-well no.”

“Really, I seem to recall that you were discussing my personal life a few moments ago.”

“I didn’t mean anything by it, I didn’t think-”

“You didn’t think that I could hear? Well you were wrong, and you know who else heard you? Maya.” I was nearly yelling but I was managing to keep my cool. “But no matter how much I yell at you for it, as soon as I turn my back you will continue to talk about my personal life.” It was true, until there was some new gossip, they would just tear Maya apart. “You want something to gossip about? I will give you something to gossip about.” I grabbed Kale and crashed my lips against his. I heard several gasps but that didn’t matter. I had to make this a nice and convincing kiss to get everyone off of Maya’s back. I could take their shit, but she shouldn’t have to. I slid my tongue into his mouth and we must have stood there for over a minute. When I pulled back we were both out of breath and everyone was silent. “Gossip about that!” I yelled leaving the room to find Maya.

I found her sitting behind the school crying. I slid down the brick wall so that I sat on the ground next to her. I slung my arm over her shoulders and pulled her close to me. She continued to cry into my shoulder. “This is going to be really hard Max.”

“Yeah it will be, but I’m here for you. You know that Kale, Kali, Jake, Nick, and Beth are too. We will make this work.” I reassured her.

“But they are all talking about us, about me.” She sniffed.

“I don’t think that they will be talking about this for a while.”

“Why wouldn’t they?”
