Overload 5-I Have a Problem
The rest of the week went quickly, if not awkwardly. We never discussed our kiss and for the two of us it seemed to be the obvious elephant in the room. When we were alone we kept ourselves busy playing video games. Kale cooked for us almost every night and I watched him in amazement. By the time Friday afternoon rolled around we could hardly look at each other, it seemed like the awkwardness kept building as time went on and eventually one of us was bound to explode. The thought had occurred to me that even though I had kissed a guy and not a girl, I had cheated on Maya, and that thought pained me.
I had been with her since freshman year and now we only had about a month left of our junior year and I really did love her. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see a text from none other than Maya.
-Hey Babe! <3
I closed my phone without responding and stared at the partying teenagers in my pool, I leaned back in the lawn chair that I currently occupied and closed my eyes, trying to relax a little. I had never once sat out of one of my own parties before, but I just wasn’t into it this week. “Max, you lazy bum!” Bethany said jumping on top of me. If any other girl had done that it would have been weird but with Bethany I knew that she was just a friend. Besides Beth was totally into Jake so I wasn’t concerned.
“Ugh, Beth please leave me alone!” I whined.
“No way, you cannot sit out of your own party, I will not allow it!” She yelled dragging me inside and on to the dance floor, where I stood awkwardly as she danced around me. Jake walked by shoving a beer into my hand wordlessly as he passed. I looked around and I saw Kali and Nick talking together, and teenagers dancing and being crazy everywhere. One person that I didn’t see was Kale but that was fine with me seeing as how we were barely talking right now. I didn’t even really know why.
I let myself relax and just party, eventually Nick and Kali were dancing together and Beth and I were right alongside them. Jake was dancing on a table after winning a drinking game and people were making out on every surface imaginable. After a few hours of partying and getting myself thoroughly drunk I dispersed most of the party-goers, sending them home. The only ones that remained were those belonging to the junior class. I then went upstairs with every intention of going to bed. Kale’s door was open so I thought that I would at least say good night to him.
Inside Kale was standing next to a tall blond guy that was quite attractive and I paused in the doorway. Just as I was about to walk away the other boy leaned in and kissed Kale. I have no idea what it was but a burning sensation ignited in my chest. Perhaps it was due to my drunken state but that totally pissed me off. The kiss was short but the grin on the new guy’s face said that he thought he owned Kale. That grin made this guy look like the total embodiment of being an asshole.
“What the hell?” I yelled my anger clear in my voice. Both boys looked at me and although Kale’s face paled, the other guy’s grin just grew wider.
“Max,” Kale barely whispered.
“What the hell is this?” I was glaring daggers at the blond. “Who the hell is this?” I yelled looking the other guy up and down. “Get out!” I yelled, not giving either of them time to respond to my questions.
“I’m not going anywhere until this guy tells me to,” He smirked.
“This guy?” I yelled. “Do you make a habit of kissing guys whose names you haven’t bothered to learn? Get the hell out!” I yelled again.
“Who are you to tell me to get out?”
“This is my house, and if I want you out, then you’re out! Now leave!”
The other guy’s smile was gone as he shrugged past me leaving the room and hopefully the house as well. I just stared at Kale and I have no idea what I expected him to say. I kind of wanted him to apologize, but for what? He wasn’t my boyfriend or anything and he could kiss whoever he wanted to. “Who was that?” I growled trying to calm myself. “Kale?”
“His name is Sam.”
“And?”
“And...what? What do you want from me Max? Do you want me to explain myself? I don’t owe you an explanation.” A glint of anger shined in his incredible eyes and all I could do was stare. “We aren’t together Max and you are the one that kissed me. I owe you nothing.” I have to admit, that stung a bit. I looked down at the floor trying to get a grip.
“What’s happening to me?” I mumbled so low that I doubt if he heard me.
“I don’t know Max, I don’t know, and apparently you don’t want to talk about it so there is nothing that I can do to help you.” He sighed. “That’s a shame Max, because I actually liked you, but I can’t waste time on someone who isn’t even trying to figure it out.” Ouch! He was being incredibly open and outgoing for him.
“I-I don’t know what to do, I love Maya, I know I do or at least I did.”
“But?”
“But I think that I could like you too, but I don’t even know how to like a guy.” The exchange of honesty here was refreshing and scary as hell.
“Then it looks like you have a problem,” he whispered. “So what, Maximum, are you going to do about it?” I could hear the challenge in his voice and it made me gulp nervously. I walked over so that I was standing nearly nose to nose with him, and for the second time I placed my hand on the side of his face and leaned in, just barely brushing our lips together. In a surprise show of confidence Kale took over, capturing my lips in his. This kiss held a passionate fire that I had never felt before, and I was addicted to it.
Yeah I had a problem alright…
Who is Sam, and where do they go from here?
