Awww! Poor Max! This is an okay chapter, I'm not really that into it myself. What do you guys think? I decided on Sarah Hyland to play Maya.
Overload 16-Don’t Leave Me
When I woke up I was in a hospital room hooked up to chest monitors and an IV. Damn I hated hospitals and I have spent too much time in this one lately. I opened my eyes and Maya was sitting next to me with her hand in mine. “Hey,” She smiled down at me.
“Hi” I whispered.
“How do you feel?”
“Like my leg was run over by a herd of bison. How are you?” I said truthfully.
“I would have understood if you had come right here rather than coming to my place.”
“I couldn’t risk Trent hurting you, I would never forgive myself.” I moved my hand so that our fingers were laced with each other’s. Her hand in mine felt so familiar. She smiled shyly at me.
“You didn’t have to…”
“Yes I did, I couldn’t let him hurt anyone else that I love.” She blushed. “Besides I seriously needed to kick that boy’s ass, it was long overdue.” I chuckled.
“You worried me,” she whispered.
“Don’t waste your time worrying about me.”
“Isn’t it natural to worry about those that you love?” She asked.
“Yeah, I suppose that it is. Where’s Kale?”
“He went to the cafeteria to get us some coffee.” She explained. “Your dad was here.” She whispered randomly.
“He was?” She nodded. “Well that was uncharacteristically caring of him.”
“He wanted to stay until you woke up. But he went into the office this morning with the intention of leaving town tonight. So he had to go to the airport in order to make his flight.” Of course he did.
“Hey,” Kale said from the doorway and Maya quickly let go of my hand but it was obvious that Kale had noticed. He handed her a cup of coffee and she muttered a thank you. “How are you?” He came over to the other side of my bed and pulled up a chair.
“What exactly happened?” I asked.
“Your leg needed several stitches and they are pumping you full of pain meds to make it bearable. Also you are on antibiotics in order to combat infection. As long as you stay off of it for a while and everything goes according to plan you should be fine.” He explained and it sounded as if he had been talking to a lot of doctors. He looked stressed out and worried and that upset me. I didn’t want him fretting over me.
I took his hand in mine and he smiled shyly. I was incredibly thirsty and it felt like he could read my mind as he handed me his coffee. I took a gulp of it and I smiled when I realized that he had gotten French Vanilla which was my favorite. Kale usually drank his black but he had been thoughtful enough to get my favorite instead.
“I should get going, it is getting late.” Maya excused herself leaving us alone. I could tell that Kale was really tired so I slowly moved over in my bed and patted the empty space beside me. Kale climbed in next to me and I was very self-conscious as I was wearing only a hospital gown. He pulled me to his chest and he was incredibly warm. Before I knew it I had fallen asleep there in his arms.
When I woke up, I must have been asleep less than an hour. Kale was staring down at me from his position propped up on his elbow. He moved his hand to brush my bangs out of my face. “What are you thinking?” I asked shifting a little bit so that I could face him more directly.
“You weren’t kidding when you said that you loved her.” He was trying hard to keep the emotion off of his face but I could see that he was quite upset.
I sighed. “No, Kale I wasn’t. I don’t joke about things like that.” He looked away as I spoke.
“Could you ever love me that much?” He asked glancing back at me before looking away again. Now I really knew that for him this wasn’t a game. It wasn’t a game for me either, but it made me realize how much it would hurt him if this turned out to be just a phase of mine. But how could this be a phase? This wasn’t a random crush that you have no real desire to pursue, and honestly I don’t think that pure lust could have driven me to give up Maya even if she would take me back. Kale turned back to me expectantly. I realized that I had to decide where I wanted this to go. Kale needed me to decide now but I would have to be sure about my decision.
He moved to get up and the pain was plastered all over his face. It was obvious that he had taken my silence as a no. He swung his legs off the bed in order to get up and leave. No. He couldn’t, if he walked out that door it was clear that we would be done. I noticed how much the thought of that hurt me and I had an answer for him. I grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him back to me so that he was practically lying on top of me nose to nose. “Don’t.” I whispered sharply. I breathed in nervously and Kale’s scent poured into me. “D-Don’t assume things. I know that I could love you just like I love her.” I paused exhaling slowly. “I think that I am already half way there, and I don’t want you to leave. I really, really don’t want you to leave me.” I locked eyes with him and there was an intensity there that startled me.
He turned his head slightly and lowered his soft lips over mine and he seemed to inhale deeply with his lips there teasing mine. “You smell nice.” He whispered softly not moving. Yeah right, I smelled like a sweaty jock that had rolled around in the grass. I just stared into his eyes waiting to see what he would do next. He pushed his face closer to mine completely connecting our lips. I quickly and eagerly responded shifting my face for a better angle. A few seconds later the kiss ended leaving me wanting more. Kale rolled off of me and lay next to me again. He rested his head on my chest with his arm across my abs. I wrapped my arm around his back and sleep soon found us both.
I woke up in the middle of the night and I nearly screamed. The pain in my leg was so incredibly intense that I bolted up right causing Kale to snap awake. I tore off the covers to look at my leg which was wrapped tightly in bandages. It felt like someone was cutting the inside of my leg with a knife. Kale jumped up and ran out of the room. When he came back in he was followed by a nurse. “What seems to be the problem?” she asked me.
“It feels like I am being stabbed from the inside of my leg!” I exclaimed through clenched teeth.
“I’ll give you some more pain meds.” She said moving to the IV stand.
“No. Something is wrong, this isn’t old pain this is new and it is happening now.”
“Okay, I’ll get the doctor.” A few minutes later she returned with the doctor behind her.
“Okay son, let’s have a look. The doctor pulled up a stool next to the bed and began removing the bandages from my leg. “None of the stitches seem to be loose.” He began pressing on different parts of my leg to see if it hurt. When he got to just below the back of my knee I grimaced. “That hurts?”
“Mhm.”
“We may have missed a piece of glass in your leg. Your body will naturally try to expel it and that may be why you are experiencing some discomfort. We will have to have an x-ray to be sure.” With that they helped me into a wheelchair and took me away to x-ray leaving Kale behind.
