Overload 22-One Will Cease to Burn
Kale’s lips felt great pressed against mine, right where they belong. “Okay guys, let’s go.” Jake whined rolling his eyes at our PDA. We were all going to the local lake which was near downtown and Jake was as impatient as ever. We had decided to go to the lake as sort of a wake, to the end of the school year. It was sort of to recognize all that has happened but to be thankful that we are all still here. It would just be our group all night. I swung on my crutches as we all headed to my truck. Kale drove with Maya and I in the back seat. Jake, Nick, Beth, and Kali rode in the flat bed.
It was sunset and the mood of the night was just perfect. The lake was breathtaking and we all took the chance to take it in as Kale drove to the parking lot. When we got out of the truck we had to walk over a grassy hill that had a few trees here and there to get to the picnic area by the lake. I felt horrid when I realized that I was the only one that didn’t have to carry anything because of my crutches. Kale carried a large cooler full of hotdogs and hamburgers to grill and beer and soda to drink. Nick carried a box full of white candles and Jake carried a box of blankets with plates, cups, and utensils in it too.
When we came over the hill we paused overwhelmed by the ever present beauty of the lake and nature in general. When we got down by the lake Kale set about firing up the grill while Nick and I spread the candles around. Jake spread blankets around and Kali and Beth were lighting the candles behind Nick and I. By the time that the food was ready night had fallen and the moon had risen. Our only light other than moonlight came from the 50 candles that surrounded us. Kale and I lay down on a blanket together and began to eat. We all laughed and just had a good time together until we finished eating. After that Beth insisted on taking a whole crap load of pictures and we obliged.
The rest of them dove into the water so that Kale and I were left alone. I craned my neck so that I could slowly press my lips to Kale’s and we just lay there kissing for quite some time. It was completely sweet and I’m pretty sure that it had more to do with Love than with Lust. I abruptly stopped when a beach ball hit me in the side of the head. I heard Jake and Nick laughing at the look on my face. “Did you get that one Bethany?” Jake asked.
“Yeah, I got it but my camera’s dying so no more priceless moments.” She whined.
“My camera is in the truck,” Nick offered.
“I’ll go get it,” I said pulling myself up onto my crutches.
“I’ll come with,” Kale said.
“No, I’ve got it. I know that you want to go swim.” Kale smiled and gave me a quick kiss before heading over to the water. I knew that he wanted to swim but with my leg I hadn’t thought that it would be a good idea and so he had sacrificed it for me and stayed with me. He deserved to have some fun.
“Don’t take too long,” he hollered after me making me smile. I swung my way back over the hill towards the parking lot. As I went I couldn’t help but notice that one of the candles had gone out. I would have to light it again on my way back. I was halfway to the truck when my phone vibrated and I paused, balancing on my crutches as I fished in my pocket for my still ringing phone. “Hi Dad.” I answered.
