Overload 21-Never Gonna be Alone

                The next week dragged by ever so slowly. Finals went fine and I managed to maintain my 4.0 average for my junior year and three days had now passed since the unofficial last day of school. The school had been abuzz with the rumors that ranged from me willingly sleeping with Trent to him having gone all the way in raping me. Those who hadn’t known about the rape five years ago did now. Their reactions ranged from pity to those of the homophobes that claim that I deserved that.

                Nick had nearly gotten expelled on the last day of school for threatening Brittany when she said, “You got caught trying to have rough sex with some loser rapist, so you concocted some stupid story so that your boyfriend wouldn’t know that you didn’t want him anymore.” Or something like that…It’s not as if I memorized it or anything like some pathetic loser…That bitch…

                I now lay alone on my bed staring at the ceiling just thinking. My father had flown to England for two days to wrap up a deal before coming home to spend the summer with Kale and I. He actually seemed to be trying to form a relationship with both of us, and maybe I would let him. My father could never make up for the past but he could pave the way for the future.

                Jake and Nick had gone to rustle up some beer and pizza for the end of the year party that I would be hosting tonight. Kale had gone to pick up some groceries and other things that we needed for the house in general. So for the first time in what seemed like forever I found myself alone. I’d like to say that it was nice and that I felt relieved, like I could finally breathe again. But I absolutely hated it! I had always deeply feared being alone. Living alone. Dying alone.

                I had grown up with my mom and Jordan always around. Then I lost my mother but Jordan was still my constant. He was the Sun and I was just one of the many planets that clung to him, that revolved around him. I like to think that I had been Mercury, the closest, the warmest. I sighed deeply, the truth is that I’m one of those candles that relies on the flames of those close to me to burn. I need, no I crave human contact. Human contact is what keeps me going and even being alone for the last two hours was excruciating and unbearable. It left me with only my thoughts, my memories, and my pain. I sighed with happiness as I heard the all too familiar holler of my friends from downstairs.

                I could go down to meet them but I was feeling lazy so I waited until their familiar faces popped around the corner of my half open door and grinned. “Honey, I’m home!” Jake said with a bright smile. They both entered without asking permission, as usual. Their comfort in my home reminded me of when they used to practically live here. It made me realize how much I had neglected our friendship recently. We had done everything together for as far back as I can remember and now it felt like we hardly ever saw each other. That was the one bright side of the past week; my friends had been around constantly. The part that saddened me was the look of sadness and pity that always seemed to flash in their eyes when they saw me, despite their ever present smiles it was there even now.

                Jake popped the cap off of an ice cold beer and passed it over to me. “Drink up bro because we are going all out tonight.” I accepted the drink gladly and gulped half of it down in one swig.

                “I love you guys,” I suddenly said and although I could tell by the looks on their faces, they would act like it was awkward, but it wasn’t. They knew that I meant as a brother and we all knew that the feelings were mutual.
