Chapter 7...
Derek was sitting in class when the principal announced the soon to be event for the whole school. He didn't actually cared for participating in any school activities, much less a school event, but everyone spoke about how it will be mandatory to participate. This event was to be held for one whole week, which will be in 2 weeks time. All classes will be postponed for two weeks since this was a special occasion, for both the students as well as the students. One week will be held for the preparations and the other was for entertaining as well as having some fun.
During the whole week he had made friends with people, he particularly enjoyed one of his classmate. Rick has the same time table as his own, which is why they became friends so easily. He was sitting a few rows in front of him and knew that he was totally excited for the whole event. He was fun to hangout with. He reminded him of someone, like a friend, that's partly one of the reasons he liked him straight away. Rick asked him if he wanted to eat lunch with him, which he thought about for a few seconds. Derek wasn't the kind of guy who wanted too much attention. He was about to say no, but Rick already started to persuade him.
"Come on Derek, it will be fun! "
He wanted to kindly turn him down, but he actually thought that this might be a good experience for him. So he told him that he would come and Rick slapped his back and told him, " I might warn you though, you will be eating lunch with two other girls," Derek just shrugged, to show that he didn't mind. However, that made him remember what a happened a week ago in the reception, the girl who was obviously sad, he knew it by the way he saw it in her eyes, they seem so grief stricken for a moment then it was quickly replaced by anguish. Sure, she looked alright in the outside but he knew she was suffering in the inside. He didn't want to see her expression again; when he thought of how she felt, he was quickly over come with guilt. And he hated himself for feeling it. Derek thought that there was a chance that one of the girls Rick was talking about might be her, but he quickly dismissed it. There was a big chance that she might not be it, if so he will just act casually as if nothing happened.
Lunch time rolled by and Derek was a minute or two late for lunch. Rick said that he would meet him in the cafeteria because Derek had to stay behind to talk to the teacher. The teacher only wanted to ask him how he was doing with his studies, which he reassured the teacher that he was doing fine. So the teacher let him out after a minute or two. He walked towards the cafeteria in a quick pace, trying to get to the cafeteria as fast as he could do by walking calmly in a mannered pace.
As he entered the cafeteria he quickly looked around for Rick in the crowded space. He knew by the time he would get there that a lot of people would already be in queue for their lunch, so he didn't mind not getting to eat lunch today since he was still full from the breakfast he ate that morning. He glanced from table to table, trying to find Rick.
His gaze drifted to the table near the end of the cafeteria. He was frozen in his place for a second as he saw that girl from a week ago. She sat there in the table with her long brown hair flowing in her back, her violet eyes flickered with confusion as she stared at the couple who was walking towards her. It was Rick holding the hand of a petite girl with short black hair and brown eyes. As soon as he saw them Rick shifted his gaze towards Derek and waved him over. Derek walked towards the table and caught a glimpse of the girl shifting a bit in her seat. She seemed uncomfortable for some reason, and he knew it had something to do with him.
"Derek, this is my girlfriend Alice," Rick told him as he stopped next to their table. Alice was nice as she extended her hand towards him to shake. He of course accepted it and also introduced himself and that's when Rick turned towards the girl who was obviously trying to not be noticed. He turned towards her and immediately gazed into those violet eyes of hers that seems to draw him in. Rick placed his hand on Derek shoulder as he introduced him, "This is Derek and this," he pats the girls shoulder, "is Scarlett," This time he extended his hand towards the girl named Scarlett, as if it acted in its own accord. Scarlett hesitated for a second, as if trying to figure out why he was so friendly to her but she shakes his hand in return to not seem rude towards a friendly gesture.
They were stuck like that for a minute, then Alice interrupts it, they both released each other’s hand while Alice says "Scarlett and me are in the same class in Art, and I heard you have the same time table as Rick?" Rick who was behind Alice answers her question in an heart beat. "Of course we have the same one, it's exactly identical," Alice looked at Rick behind her and quickly elbowed him in the stomach, which of course leaves Rick gasping for air. Derek rose and eyebrow at them. Aren't couples supposed to all lovey-dovey? Derek thought that this couple is the complete opposite, never the less, he knew they like each other very much.
"Sorry," Rick mutters. Alice glance at him for a brief second and then she glanced back at Scarlett and me, then back towards Rick. She takes his arm and dragged him in the corner. They talked in whispers and occasionally look at our direction, then goes back talking. I glanced at Scarlett who was sitting there with a frown in her face while she faced Alice and Rick's direction. Derek knew they were up to something, but he didn't have a clue what it could be.
After a while they came back and looked at both Scarlett and me in an apologetic expression. "Sorry you guys, but me and Rick have to go somewhere urgent. Can I ask you a favour?" Alice asks Derek. He just replied, "Sure. What is it?"
"Can you take Scarlett to her next class?"
He was taken aback by Alice's request that it took him a second to answer. "Sure," He was sure she was going to ask something academically related or something else, but not this. Alice looked at Scarlett who was apparently shocked by her request. Scarlett grabbed Alice's hand and whispered something in her ear. She looked annoyed but Alice just looked at her with a convincing expression while replying to Scarlett's statement. Scarlett was about to say something back, but she hesitated and ended the conversation. Alice came over quickly towards Rick, took his hand and dragged him out of the cafeteria as he told him sorry.
He was left there standing and facing the way Alice and Rick went through as they left. Beside him was Scarlett who was looking at the same way. How did this ended up like this?
