Year three at NYU was sure to be far more stressful for Emma Swan than the first one had been. Although she had the advantage of knowing who to avoid and how to avoid them, there was the fact that she even had people to avoid.
She couldn't understand how people could be so mean. How could they take pleasure in making her life miserable?
The first day is always the worst day, she told herself as she stared in the mirror at her reflection. It only gets better from here... I hope.
Emma's only friend Mary-Margret waited for her at the door of their dorm so they could go get some coffee from the cafe on campus together before their first classes.
She took a deep breath, slipping into her comfortable navy blue jeans, a nice white blouse, and her brown combat boots, curling her hair slightly and throwing on some natural makeup before her black-rimmed glasses.
"Ready, Em?" Mary-Margret called.
"Yep, coming," Emma answered, grabbing her books from her desk and her dorm key. "Let's go," she said with a smile.
They strolled down the grounds of the campus together, enjoying the warm autumn weather while it lasted.
It was a beautiful campus. The little park in the center of it all where the students hung around during free blocks was refreshing. Rolling green grass and flowerbeds surrounded the sidewalks, tall oak trees casting long shadows, perfect for reading a good book.
A cute cafe, the one Emma and Mary-Margret were headed to, was directly beside the NYU library, and on the opposite side, the auditorium.
As the two women walked into the cafe, the catcalls Emma was used to emerged behind her.
"Can I get some time with that fine ass?" one man said with a wink.
"I'd kill to have just ten minutes alone to make her scream," said another, whistling.
"Fuck off," Emma said with a glare, smacking their hands away from her.
"Oh, she's a feisty one," the first man said, licking his lips and flicking her glasses.
"Leave her alone," Mary-Marget said, stepping up to defend her friend.
"Yeah, yeah, can't a guy have some fun?"
"Why don't you go have fun with whatever slut you slept with yesterday and back the hell off," Emma countered. The men rolled their eyes, leaving the cafe.
Emma sighed, annoyed, and plopped down at a table with Mary-Margret, both of them setting their books down.
"Thanks. I swear, it's like I'm not allowed to have just one good day," Emma mumbled, hugging her arms.
"Hey," Mary-Margret said, taking her hand gently. "I don't care how many guys try to get in your pants or how many girls hate you, I'm always gonna be here for you."
"I know, thank you," Emma answered with a weak smile.
They ordered their coffee, each of them instantly relaxing a bit to the taste washing down their throats. They took their cups to go, heading out of the cafe to walk around the campus a bit more since they had some time on their hands before their first classes started.
"Hey look, it's that Swan girl," whispers said behind Emma. She frowned, casting her eyes to the ground to avoid the stares all around her.
"She's so stupid, nobody likes her, why does she even go here?" another voice said. Emma swallowed back the comment, used to being a target.
