The ride back was quiet. The only sounds that could be heard were the winds rushing past me and Axel’s shallow breathing. I felt bad for the guy, but I knew better than to show it. It would only hurt his pride and the last thing I want to do is hurt him.
When we finally made it back, I hopped off of Rose and practically dragged Axel across the grassy field. I was breaking a sweat by the time I made it inside the barn. I leaned him against a pile of hay and brought the dragons in. I walked into one of the old horse stalls and grabbed a bucket a small bowl and a flashlight. There was a whole bunch of random stuff in there that I borrowed from home and never returned.
I walked out to the lake and grabbed a pail of water and a rock. I ran back inside and sat in the center of the barn. I took out the plant the man gave me. My heart sank a little not once did I ever ask for his name and yet, he had been so kind. I shook my thoughts away and concentrated on what was in front of me. I placed the flashlight between my teeth and started crushing the plant in the bowl. Once the plant became somewhat of a powder, I poured water in the bowl and mixed until it became creamy. I smiled at my final product and began spreading it on the dragons. It was hard to tell where Knights wounds were because of the limited light, but I tried my best to find all his injuries.
By the time I reached Axel, there was hardly any of my cream left and I knew there wouldn’t be enough for me. I sighed and began washing of the dry blood off of his forearm. My brows furrowed when I saw small bits of blood trickle down his shoulder. I pulled off his shirt and my eyes widened in shock. Axel had been bitten. I mentally slapped myself. ‘How could I be so stupid not to notice this?’ I jumped up and ran over to my storage supply and grabbed my first aid kit.
I poured water on his wound to wash out any dirt. He winced a little as the cool water made contact with his skin. I tore off a clean part of his shirt and wiped off any blood. My eyes began to blur and I realized that tears were trying to make its way out. I shook my head and squeezing my eyes shut, not daring to let even a single drop fall on my face. I gingerly place most of the leftover cream onto his shoulder blade, saving a little for his arm. Once I was done, I wrapped his wounds in gauze and relaxed besides him.
I shut my eyes for a few minutes before realizing that sleep had not yet won me over. I stared out into the dim lit room and sighed. I was the only one still awake and I decided some fresh, night air might do me some good. I was about leave when Rose slightly, lifted her head and made a small grunt as if to inquire where I was off to. I smiled and quietly ran over to her. I gave her a kiss on her nose.
“Don’t worry girl, I’m just getting some air.” She gave a slight nod and rested her head between her front feet once more. I walked outside and turned off the flashlight. The moon’s light was quiet bright tonight and made the clearing, if possible, even more beautiful. I decided to sit by the lake. I took off my socks and shoes and placed them beside me. I crouched down near the water, letting my toes touch the icy waves as they gently crash onto the shore. I looked down at my own reflection, my purple eyes standing out from the rest of my features.
I heard twig snap from behind me and turned to see my dragon coming closer. She stopped knelt beside me. I rested my head against her and stared into the distance.
“It’s been one hell of a day hasn’t it girl?” we both just looked to the sky as a shooting star flew above us. “One day we’ll touch the stars. One day people like me will no longer have to hide our true selves from the world. One day soon… I hope.” I scotched back from a little so that I can sprawl across the grass. Rose readjusted herself as well and we both drifted off under the night sky.
“You shouldn’t sleep with your mask on. Otherwise you might find yourself with an awkward tan.” I awoke to see Axel looming over me. I smiled up at him, he looked so much better. “Hey this green stuff you put on me, where’d you get it?”
