I'm still staring down the dark hallway, wishing like hell Dominic would come back when I think I see movement.
Is it him?
Did he change his mind?
Wait, there are too many footsteps echoing toward me and I have to squint to get a better look. Suddenly the darkness begins to fade the closer they get and I quickly make out my brother and he's walking with Skylar.
Without thinking, I charge toward him and toss my arms around his neck, "Oh my God, I thought you were..." I stop myself from saying it out loud.
"Possessed?" Skylar says, nonchalantly, as he pulls me in tighter, "thanks to this guy right here," he tilts his head toward Zack, "I'm clean."
"What?" I get out before Zack chimes in, "He's okay, Kate. He was only influenced but nothing more."
I let out a breath and hug Skylar again, "Whoa!" he laughs, "I missed you, too."
"Do you understand?" I pause and step back, looking over to Zack, "What's going on?"
"Oh," Skylar looks down at me and then to Zack like he's asking permission, "I've been briefed of the situation, if that's what you mean."
"Briefed?" I repeat his word, darting my eyes to Zack, "How much does he know?"
"Most of it," Zack answers, "but, we should probably talk," he says, walking passed me as he takes a seat by the fireplace. He rubs his jawline like he's deciding where to begin and clears his throat, "I restored Skylar's memory."
I look over to Skylar as he takes a seat next to Zack, so I sit in the wingback directly across from them, "Does he remember being at the cemetery? And watching Uncle John attack me? Or, seeing the Demon who almost killed Dominic?"
"Yes." Zack confirms, "I had to. Otherwise, he wouldn't have believed any of this." he pauses and leans his elbows in his knees, "the good thing is, he has no memory of Zull's influence. Only that he was walking to his car when a man approached him."
I can't help thinking it's a little strange that we're talking about Skylar as if he's not even here so I look straight at him, "This is a lot to take in. Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Skylar says, shifting in his chair, "but I gotta say, this place definitely suits you. You look amazing."
My eyes flash over to Zack, "I haven't had a chance to tell him everything."
Automatically, I take in a breath and let it out, "He needs to understand our world and what we are." I whisper, to Zack as Skylar quickly locks eyes with me.
That got his attention.
"What you are?" he tilts his head, "what are you talking about?"
"There's much more you don't know," Zack says, looking Skylar dead on, "My sister and I come from a long and ancient line of..." he pauses for a second, "Seraph's."
Skylar chuckles nervously and then tilts his head like he just understood what Zack said, "You mean like angels or something?"
Zack smiles, nodding his head and Skylar's eyes come back to mine, "You're a freaking angel?"
"She's a little more than that." Zack chimes in, and I close my eyes.
"More than an angel? What, is she the head angel princess or something?" Skylar laughs at his own sarcasm.
"Close," Zack tells him, "she's our Queen."
